More than 6,500 people joined the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Saturday, Oct. 17.
Among the walkers were breast cancer survivors striding along confidently. Others used wheelchairs or walkers, but some got out of those near the finish line. Others were family members walking together, with signs on their backs indicating who they were walking in memory of.
Words like “wife” or “daughter” or “friend” told their stories.
A special tent was fashioned exclusively for survivors who got perks such as chair massages.
The event was hosted by the American Cancer Society, whose organizers said they raised $375,000.
Although it was a chilly morning, with temperatures in the high 30s, thousands crowded the area in front of Fifth Third Field for the 10 a.m. walk. The walk started at the stadium, then circled around to Island Metro Park and McCook Field before heading back to the ballpark.
At the end of the 5K walk, as the walkers headed toward the RiverScape fountain, a rainbow appropriately formed behind the water’s spray.
