Turkish food is about freshness, flavor and healthy eating, and the new Sultan’s Mediterranean Cuisine offers a dining experience that highlights the owners commitment to all three.

“Our food is made daily from scratch, and it’s so fresh you can actually feel it,” said Mehmet Coskun, who opened the restaurant six weeks ago with Turkish chef Mustafa Koylu.

Sultan’s is housed in the old Encore Café just off Tylersville Road.

Koylu said he makes each dish with love, highlighting the food of his family and hometown of Gaziantep.

“My baklava is made with crushed pistachio and simple syrup instead of with honey, and my Kunefe (a Turkish dessert) is made with shredded cheese, because that’s the way I did it at home,” said Koylu.

Lamb is the featured meat at Sultan’s, but a variety of kebabs are offered, made with chicken or beef. Market fresh seafood is offered daily, and appetizers such as Baba Ghanoush and Carrot Tarator are made with smoked Turkish eggplant and carrots shredded in garlic yogurt.

“All of our appetizers are vegetarian, and we use fresh vegetables every day,” said Mehmet Coskun.

Salad lovers will enjoy the shepherd salad, a house specialty which does not include lettuce but is made with tomato, parsley, cucumber, onions, scallions, feta cheese and a homemade oil and vinegar dressing.

Kids menu items include American favorites like burgers, fries and macaroni and cheese, available to those under 10.

For those who don’t care about calories, desserts at Sultan’s Mediterranean Cuisine are rich and delectable with the aforementioned baklava being a customer favorite. Full bar service will be available at the restaurant by the end of the month, and the extensive wine list will feature varieties from Turkey, Lebanon, Australia and Spain.

Sultan’s offers free WiFi to customers, and the restaurant may be rented for private parties on weeknights with two months’ notice. Off-site catering is available as well as carry-out, and drink specials will be offered on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Reservations are accepted.
