According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, 15 percent of today's youth are overweight and are more likely to become overweight adults.
"By tracking the issues of improper food choices, lack of physical activity and emotional eating at an early age, the Body Shop program strives to prevent a community of overweight and obese adults," said Pamela Nisevich, dietitian at Dayton Children's.
Body Shop participants will meet Tuesday nights from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for eight weeks.
Parents also work with the staff to assist their children in meeting weight loss goals.
"The Body Shop aims to impact current and future waistlines and to prevent premature onset of chronic diseases by teaching lifelong skills for health and wellness and not fad dieting," Nisevich said.
The fee to attend the Body Shop is $325 per child and includes a $25 registration fee. Once the $25 registration fee is paid, minimum payments of $37.50 per week can be made. Scholarships are also available.
"It is our goal that by the end of the program, participants will not only have better knowledge of a healthy lifestyle, but more importantly, a better outlook on life and improved self-esteem," Nisevich said.
