Great Wolf Lodge, a 380,000-gallon, year-round family water park in Mason, recently hosted the Dayton Daily News swimsuit photo session. Models are courtesy of Roof-Goenner Talent Agency.

Spring hasn't exactly sprung, but many college and high school students are ready for a break.

And many area retailers have shelved hats, gloves and heavy coats and now display a plethora of bikinis, one-pieces, hankinis, tankinis, bandokinis and the super sexy monokini.

While many students will ride out Spring Break here in the Buckeye State, others will pick out a new swimsuit before heading for sunshine with their families or friends.

For those of us not destined for Cancun, South Beach or Negril, Spring Break is a not-so-subtle reminder that summer is not so far off.

Trends? There's more than a fair share of itsy-bitsy string bikinis, but this year's suits aren't all designed for the ultra skinny.

Women and teenage girls can be as modest or sexy as they want by selecting suits that show off the positives.

Fuller-figured swimmer, your time has arrived. More suits are available for the women with more curves than the average runway model. Skin is still in, but retro- and vintage-inspired swimsuits — which generally offer more coverage — are making a splash this year.

It's all in the detail. Its OK to be a girl. There are suits featuring appliques, embroideries, crochet, ruching, ruffles, lace, bows and braiding as well as beads, stones, jewelry and nautical trinkets dangling from O-rings, keyholes and tops and bottom strings.

From boy short to bikini cut in no time flat. Some bottoms come with adjustable straps that cinch to control the leg height.

Show off your strong shoulders. Bandeau one-piece suits and bikinis are popular and can be elegant or playful.

Men — they make a great beach accessory. Plaid trunks are a popular trend, as are trunks with floral, vertical stripes and tribal- and tattoo-inspired patterns.

Blasts from the past. Large tropical flowers, polka dots and Art Deco-inspired patterns are among the popular prints. Also watch for animal- and tribal-print suits.

White stripes. Multicolor stripes — particularly white, green and blue — will be poolside this year.

Be colorful. White is predicted to be a popular color for swimwear this season, but don't overlook yellow, dark chocolate, black, emerald, navy blue, gold, red and bronze.
