TV station refuses to air 'Osbournes: Reloaded'

By Mandy Gambrell

Staff Writer

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

CINCINNATI — The debut show of "Osbournes: Reloaded" could not be seen Tuesday, March 31 by viewers of Cincinnati's Fox19 because the station felt the show was too inappropriate for a potentially younger audience.

Viewers who tuned in at 9:30 p.m. instead heard a message from Fox19's general manager Bill Lanesey.

"After previewing a portion of the program, we did not feel the content was suitable for the time period following 'American Idol,'" Lanesey said. "We estimate that over 100,000 children between the ages of 6 and 11 just finished watching 'Idol,' and we were not comfortable with the idea of exposing those same children to some of the content contained in the Osbourne special.

"We realize that many viewers were looking forward to this program and regret that our decision will prevent you from viewing the special," he said. "It can be viewed anytime after midnight tonight on either fox.com or hulu.com."

A special edition of Fox19 news aired after Lanesey's statement.

Should "Osbournes: Reloaded" have been censored?9

THE CHEF… is a remarkable example of the sort of person that our public school system is turning out: whithout sense, without even a rudimentary command of the english language, rude, and ignorant of the most basic tenets of the US Constitution. I would bet you dollars to doughnuts that he voted for Obama… But of course, we know from reading his post that he should not be qualified to vote. He claims to have his own mind… Sheesh. I never did care for Ozzie Osborne. Some people do. What gets me is people yell “My rights have been violated. Free speech! Freedom of the press.! You poor people. If people would think before reacting. Thought, now there’s a concept for you. Hurah for Channel 19. That weirdo show could be seen later on the internet so a specific age group could not see it. That age group are going to watch it anyway because the show is now taboo.

If u look at cartoon network 9:00pm is adult swim people think that is ok for ur children to watch i think that cartoon network is the last place they should air that is the last thing i want my children to watch they should censor that but they will not go figure

A retail establishment has the right to decide what it sells. A manufacturer has the right to decide what to make and sell. These TV stations have the right to decide what “product” to air. We have too much disposable income and time on our hands if all we have to complain about is the airing of the Osbornes. I doubt if people in third world nations, under dictatorships and in war zones feel our pain.

The people who are complaining about the station not broadcasting the show fall into two categories:

1) People who don’t even live within broadcast distance of the station and have no reason to complain and therefore don’t matter.

2) People who do live within broadcast distance of the station and apparently are out of touch with the values and culture of the community, and should therefore either move to one that is more to their liking or quit whining. Their opinions also don’t matter

So this TV station doesn’t have the right to refuse to broadcast the show? Who says? The people making such an absurd argument are clearly only in favor of any and all public exhibitions and broadcasts of indecency.

NEWS FLASH— there are other people in this world, and sometimes, just sometimes, they’re going to get what they want, even if it seems (gasp) dorky to you.

You don’t have to understand. You don’t even have to be mature about this. But you cannot change it.

Fascinating, Nate. So I guess that because tv has changed, we should change our values, too? Because this is not about opinions, it’s about what we stand for, what we allow to influence our lives. And that, my friend, is called values.

I am 26 and I watched the first 10 minutes of the show. It was inappropriate for children and just a lame idea for a show. If you thought the Osbournes show on MTV was lame this is that times 100. Fox has some great shows and this show should be nowhere near their standards. I’d be VERY SUPRISED if this show made it to a second season. The Osbournes are not funny or interesting. I wish my local fox affiliates would follow Bill Lanesey’s lead.

I understand that the content of the show is NOT for a younger viewing audience. There are many shows that are inappropriate for kids that include partial nudity and violence of all kinds. Many shows start with a disclaimer of “discretion is advised”. It is the parent or guardian’s responsibility to make that choice.

I think Fox made a bad decision to even make this lame show. To the non-parents making idiot remarks, I hope you learn someday that if kids think it’s a cool show, they will get up in the middle of the night just to see it, while you are asleep. It’s a good choice for the Fox station to not run it, it’s a bad decision to even make this toxic show. Another example of immoral Hollywood trying to negatively influence our children.

RE: Bruno

People with some morality are NOT what is wrong with America. People that think anything goes in a society are what is wrong with America and is becoming the downfall of this country. In addition as far as “blue language” is concerned- it is all anyone hears all day every day while we are out and about and earning a living, it would certainly be a nice change to not be inundated with it at home also without having to shut our TV off completely.Even if we use profanity on occasion some of us like to hear other types of grammar at times.

To all: This never ending rhetoric about parents monitoring their children and turning the channel is so asinine. Parents should not have to hover over the TV sets 24/7 because there is a proliferation of filth. What are people to view that don’t find this inane garbage entertaining? Liberals are not the only ones with rights in this country.

Also, as several have justly stated, it is a PRIVATE station. Now I understand that a lot of you seem to like the government making all the decisions but some of us still believe in free market enterprise. This is not censorship and thank you Fox!

The Fox network should step in and force the affiliates to run the show. It is censored. Personally the show is not my cup of tea, but the network needs the viewing audience to be there. Those who feel this strongly about show content should live in Salem, Mass. or just not watch. I don’t watch but the station affilitate has no valid reason for undermining the network programming effort. The ratings will take care of that show!

Good show, Fox!!! It’s about time some of the media outlets began implementing some responsible, common sense standards. On the humanitarian side, it avoided the commercial abuse of some mentally challenged folks being showcased for profit to an audience that apparently needs to get a life. Leave the “poor buggers” be, I say, and go read your kids a bedtime story…….

The Osborne’s are a train wreak and at the very least vulgar and mind polluting. Putting the Osborne’s on after midnight offers a fair compromise and provides you the parent the opportunity to allow your children to watch this mess. Would you really let your children watch this? If so has it occurred to you that you are derelict in your duties as a parent? Seriously airing the Osborne’s has nothing to do with the First Amendment, get an education! I agree there is a lot of other programming that should be put on after midnight such as Family Guy. Ok everyone learn to use those recording devices.

I saw a bit of the show. It sucked. Not funny and not entertaining. I am a huge fan of other Fox programs with “bad” reputations so a bit of programming in poor taste does not bother me, this did. I find there is a reason Osbourne child #3 is never photographed with them or is involved in their productions. She has good taste.

For those who say reality shows equal the end of TV, think again. Do you remember shows like “Whats My Line” or “Password” or “Candid Camera”? Those are considered reality shows. Reality shows have been around since the dawn of television. I didn’t watch the show last night but could have. My cable gets more than one Fox affiliate. I guess in other markets they realize that TV shouldn’t be a baby sitter and that most adults know how to use a remote control. Thanks Fox19 for look’in out for me…

CHEF & Other Lib Loonies:

So sad you lost your “OSBOURNE-TV.” You should go over to London and help protest the G2 Summit. Better yet, you should go to Community Organizer School and go work for Obama.

I’m PROUD of Dayton’s channel for taking a stand against the garbage spewed by the Osbourne Family - Well done. Don’t worry about the whiners sobbing over their lost On-The-Air-Profanity-Show. They’ve probably more than made up for that with Howard Stern, or their own mouths.

IT WASN’T ‘CENSORED’! If an affiliate CHOOSES not to air programming, that is their perogative. It is not “censorship”, it’s a product choice. If a local grocery store decides not to sell a national brand of breakfast cereal then nothing is being “censored”.

I’m glad that a station finally decided they were tired of the filth and tripe commonly espoused as “entertainment” nowadays (more like mental masturbation).

Giving the Osbournes another show was a monetary move to say the least. To say that there is any entertainment quality being delivered by a family who believes their talents derives from filth, profanity, and dimwittedness, IS RIDICULOUS. In our consumer world, where there are still families out there that are wanting of the basic necessities, boycotting one more piece of trash is doing our minds, hearts and souls a big favor.P.S. Reality shows equal the END of entertainment.

This is NOT a hit on the 1st Ammendment. It is true that the 1st Ammendment gives you the right to say anything that you would like. It is not true that people have to listen and that you do not have to be held accountable for what you say.

This was a business decision to not air that episode. I assure you all that they would have received far more letters if they aired it then they did by not airing it.

To The Chef,

While I applaud the right of evey American to voice their opinion, if you are going to opine I’d suggest 1) Doing a little more homework on what is actually involved in running a business, 2)respect the right of private business to decide what is and isn’t right for their enterprise and 3) use puncutation. Your argument carries significantly more weight when properly articulated and far fewer people will dismiss it based solely on its lack of sophistication.

Well because of the name Osbournes. Just look at Ozie. Look what he did at the end of the show. That is a great add for not doing drugs. His wife had a show about charm(?) school. That was another waiste of air time. Kind of like an Obama press conference.

Why bother to advertise if for weeks? It also seems a bit hypocritical based on other programs aired during the same time slots. Family Guy, House, Moment of Truth, Dollhouse? Not to mention the first few weeks of American Idol when everyone sits around with their children & watches the bad auditions & make fun of them as a family? Or the over the top ads for the upcoming news story on “Sexting”, which is also on the front page of their website? Yep, great lessons are being taught here…

They have no sense of morality to teach their children and the children are not supposed to make grownup decisions. In a lot of homes the kids are smarter and more moral than their parents, as witnessed by some of these comments. Who would want to watch a show anyway where 75% of it is bleeped out? Doesn’t say much for your mentality.

Just look at all the parents in here who are not just willing but in fact ecstatic that the all-wise TV station is making their parenting decisions for them.

“Wow, I’m glad I don’t have to make decisions,” they moan, “decisions are HARD. Good thing Pappa Fox tells my kids what’s ok and what’s not. Teach them the morality that the execs want the nation to have, Fox! Yay! Oooh, shiny!”

How about parent your own kids, you idiots. If YOU don’t think it’s appropriate for YOUR kids, then stop Y

Your retarded legislation of morality is stopping EVERYONE from watching it, and — guess what — not everyone in the area are your dumbass kids who can’t seem to handle any blue language.

You’re what’s wrong with America, you idiots.

I’m not sure praise or condemnation changes anything here. Some of you need to turn your TV’s off and go outside. Forget the stupid thing; it’s a waste of your time and life. If you’ll invest in your friends and family and things that actually matter, you’ll find the TV is useless for anything except weather reports. Some of you really need to get a hobby and quit taking TV show decisions so personal. Grow up!

Good for Fox19. Coming from Cincinnati I can’t tell you how many kids would have been exposed to this. With all the lazy parents around here someone has to play the role of the Parent.

Every television station is responsible by law for the content they air. The general manager is responsible if someone in the community decides to sue the station for indecency. Remember, since the Janet Jackson superbowl incident the fines for indecency were increased dramatically. Censorship is when the government dictates that something can’t be seen, heard, or read. This is just a general manager protecting his station.

I personally feel what Fox19 did was totally stupid. First off any responsible parent would have their child in bed or at least on their way to bed.For petes sake it was 9:30 at night and as far as I know the kids did have school today.I feel that if they can show shows like Family Guy @ 8:30pm they could have shown that. I do not feel that Family guy is made for children yet they play that at a primetime that kids can watch. We need to quit catering to the idiots of this country

Good for you Cincinnati! We had a station down here in Florida that did the same thing and I bet that you are not the only two. The Osbournes have no redeeming value and if they must be on TV then please put them on after 11 pm.

Remember, a TV station using public airwaves must act in the public trust. If they feel this is not appropriate for a timeslot, they have a right to refuse it. It’s not censorship either - go read up on your broadcast law. Yes, it might be hypocritical based on other Fox shows, but the Osbournes are offensive as a family. They way they exploit themselves (and Ozzy, who is barely “with it”) is not funny. And if you teach in public schools, you know that parents aren’t always a good filter.

I saw the first minute (or less) when this aired in Albuquerque last night. In that time Sharon, the son and daughter all used curse words that were bleeped and little avatars were placed over their mouths. Apparently the family that cusses together stays together. There is no redeeming value in a program like that. This family needs to be on cable or not on television at all.

Ummm…there was a rating for the show, TV-14, to warn parents about the show. This was shown right at the beginning of the show.

I love the other guy who is embarrassed to live in Cincinnati. Please leave as soon as possible, preferably to the “left” coast. On principle, I suspect you’d agree if it were hard core porn.

FOX19 is a business and allowed to determine what product they sell, when, and where. If you don’t like it, go somewhere you can get what you want. Frankly, with a 7 and 8 year old in the house, I’m more than happy to see them take a reasonable tactic (airing the program, but in a later time slot).

Simply amazing, why is FOX 19 trying to be the parent. A warning was issued before the show started. Would it be too hard for parents to turn the station and not allow their younger children to watch it. Oh, I forgot, parents are too STUPID to know whether it is appropriate for their children.

good for this tv station. don’t buy a tv, cable or satellite tv service. save your money and time and intellect for something right instead of wrong.

Good for the tv station. Don’t waste your time buying a new digital tv. All they have is crap and brainwashing anyway on our airwaves. situational ethics has failed promoting any decency. free speech has developed into perversion by the left. The right is doing nothing and has become equal to the left.

i’m glad they pushed it back to a later time. It’s crap. (notice that they didn’t cancel it)

my only question is, would Fox19 still feel the need to sensor other programs that it felt weren’t suitable for children or that they politically disagreed with? Like a documentary on evolution, or climate change etc..

remember, they call it “programming” for a reason.

Way to go Fox, These whiners are all the perverts who would have 24 hour hard porn on network televison. They only think of themselves and could care less about anybody else. They still have their tasteless and crass MTV to watch. let them cry.

Fox made the right decision. There are too many unsupervised minors exposed to the raunchy, disgusting programs already on TV. Society has gone down the gutter. I say enough is enough.
The audience (customer) deserves better than the Osborn’s and other junk reality shows. It is not censorship; it is called responsible programming. Bravo Fox 19.

This was not censorship..it was an exercise in good judgement. Most of our nation’s great problems, including our economic problems, have as their root decaying moral values. Whether we have the stomach to own up to it or not, we have become an immoral people left with little more than the pretense of morality.

Once again, liberals play the role of fool oh so well. My gosh, they seem so practiced at it. They get every key point backwards, again, with distinct predictability. On cue they demand more violent and more crude programming be shown regardless of public opinion of the many because they claim it is their right to view whatever they want. However, apparently private owners of stations do not have a right to censor their own programs. Yes, it is comforting to see that the leftists are dopes.
