MIDDLETOWN — As a corrections officer, Robert Preston sees the effect a poor economy has on people, education and an entire community.

The Middletown father of four is hoping the next president will rehabilitate the economy and stop jobs from going overseas.

"I feel pretty secure," he said of his own job. "But it's not always about me. It's about the community we live in."

Preston said the economy will be on his mind as he casts his vote in November, especially the negative effect a country's sour financial status can have on education.

"The cost of living goes up and then the education programs suffer because you have to make cuts," Preston said. "There's no programming to rehabilitate not only people who are incarcerated but people who have lost their jobs."

But with both candidates focused on providing school choice, Preston said his vote might go either way.

"Just because they say the right things doesn't mean they're going to do the right things," he said. "Both candidates have some decent things they're working on. My mind can be swayed either way.

"I think people should close their eyes and listen to what they're saying and choose the right candidate," he said. "The right person needs to get in office and do the right thing for the country."
