Obama criticizes 'No Child Left Behind' funding in outlining education plan

Obama says he'll double funding for charter schools

RIVERSIDE — Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama on Tuesday, Sept. 9, in this Dayton suburb laid out his education plan and it includes policies more traditionally associated with the other party.

Appearing before about 750 educators, politicians, campaign volunteers and others at Stebbins High School, Obama said he would double funding for charter schools to $400 million annually and called for using pay to reward good teachers while replacing those who fail to perform.

He was critical of government shortfalls in funding for the No Child Left Behind Act, bipartisan legislation President Bush signed in January 2002 at Hamilton High School. Yet Obama also said Democrats need to realize that "being against No Child Left Behind is not an education policy."

Underlying his plan are increases in funding for schools and higher expectations for educators. "I want experimentation, but I also want accountability," he said.

Charter schools, which are publicly funded but privately operated, have been unpopular with teacher unions and some Democrats, who argue that they drain taxpayer funds and students from traditional public schools. Obama said he would work with governors to hold charter schools more accountable and shut down those that are not successful.

"I believe in public schools," he said to strong applause. "Promising high-quality teachers in every classroom and then leaving the support and the pay for those teachers behind in wrong. Labeling a school and its students as failures one day and then throwing your hands up and walking away from them the next is wrong."

springfield teacher, didn’t you learn to read in school, Obama doesn’t have a voting record either he is just present.

M, I said nothing about a veto, just that they have had control. I admit I may have made a mistake on the length of time. If you can overlook all that man believes in and has supported for the last 20 years than have at it. I will not reply to more of your posts due to your reference to my intelligence because it just reflects on you.I guess that is just a democratic flaw.

If I wanted to see or hear NObama, all I have to do is watch a DVD of Dave. This man is the biggest phony in the history of American politics. Its Affirmative Action gone wild. A mother white, a father black, the blending of both. He has no bipartison vote on record but is to bring change. He selects as a running mate, a 35 year career politicial from Washington, who’s tax payers funds, paid for his rail road ticket each day commuting from Delaware to DC. All hat, no cattle.

apparently “m” doesn’t grasp the concept of sarcasm, that was the point of the comment, that Palin has no experience to speak of, let alone a voting record to view. Thanks for higlighting the ignorance that is clearly abundant and emphasizing my point of the necessity for better teachers in our schools.

And to Springfield Teacher, get a grip on the facts too. Ms. Palin is not a member of Congress, thus she doesn’t have a voting record. She is the acting Govenor of the State of Alaska. And you teach children ?

Hey Dismay, the Democrats have held the Congress for 2 years and by one seat. If that is power, you aren’t too bright. Did you know it takes 67% of Congress to overturn a Presidential Veto, something that wasn’t envoked under the Republican years of 2000 - 2006 ? Now with a Democratic Congess, Bush seems to Veto quite a bit more these days. At least get the facts correct.

I agree wholeheartedly with what Obama wants to do with our schools, if the schools are not doing what our children need-get rid of them, and if the teachers refuse to update their teaching style to help our children succeed, they should not be rewarded for it. The old-school teachers who think lecturing is the best way to teach need to retire and let some young teachers rejuvinate our schools!

Its sad that McCripple is pimping Sarah Palin to get votes how desperate are you repub’s! OBAMA 08!

Quote: there was no checks and balances for the republican party. They controlled the Senate, House, and Executive office.

Reality Check, the democrats controlled the congress for the last 4 years, so they shoulder most of the blame for present conditions. Their reluctance to domestic fuel exploration and enhancement has resulted in the US sending $7+ billion dollars to foreign countries that should and could have stayed here.

A major reason why we are where we are is there was no checks and balances for the republican party. They controlled the Senate, House, and Executive office. The same will happen if we get OBAMA, except it will be the democrats with no checks and balances. OBAMA=DISTASTER

First. SSI/Healthcare govt assistance should be for individuals that “deserve”* it. *Those that deserve it are those who are working and or trying to actively find work. Health care should be providing to everyone up until 18 years of age and then after that they should still get it if and only if they are employed or a full time student. OBAMA will lead us into a significant DEPRESSION. You think it is bad now, vote for OBAMA and see how horrific it will be.

It sure makes sense to speak to a group of educators during the precious time they are SUPPOSED to be working and are on the taxpayers dollar. Of course the school systems had to hire subs to fill in for the professionals, who I doubt liked hearing that bad teachers should be canned and we need to spend more money on failed charter schools, both issues hardly on the NEA agenda! The more we spend on education, the less we see for results - until parents get involved, there can be no progress.

How can McCain be for change, he has been a senator for 26 years. The only McCain ran for public office is he knew he couldn’t amount to anything and become an admiral like his father and grandfather. It is going to be the same old thing until somebody gets rid of all these old senators, Stevens,Kennedy & Byrd. And all of the old members of the house. You can’t be in Washington over 10 years and become beholding to all of the lobbists.

We do the research but it is riddled with his endless rhetoric that people want to hear with no regard to validity. You want change, wait until tomorrow and he will give you a different version.

Take the time and read about this man and his life and beliefs, you may take him off his pedestal.

The only thing worse than Obama is the fact the American people are so frustrated with the economy and fuel crisis they are believing all the self proclaimed messiah is spewing. When have any of you been employed by a homeless person, or one considered in the poverty class? If he raises taxes on the wealthy, who by the way own the businesses and companies we need, they will pass the cost down to the consumers. They will have less profit to expand, maintain, and promote the products. We do.

And to add to that, the GOP must believe money grows on trees. The Federal Deficit when the Bush train took over office was somewhere around 6 Trillion with a balanced budget leftover from the Clinton administration. Now we are 9.5 Trillion in debt with no end in sight and my tax dollars rebuilding some sand castle in Iraq which I could care less about. But, thank god for Halliburton’s over charges to me and you.

Ok, in the past 8 years, what has the GOP accomplished ? In 2001, gas was $1.59 a gallon. Lobbiests write a bill to deregulate trading of oil has profitted the market extremely well. Natural Gas and Electric, two items that were “Public” utilities have been sold off to mega-corps and “shortages” have shown up, thus doubling those costs. Free Trade has lost 1000’s of US jobs to overseas slave labor ($300 a yr in China) and US Corporations profit from it. Only new jobs are fast food and retail.

I never leave comments for things like this, but the stupidity around here is appalling! FormerOhioMan talks about taxes being so low since Bush has been in office…what about the deficit that is now $400 billion! Before Bush was in office the deficit was erased and that was after cleaning up the mess that Reagan left. No one can deny that they had more money during the Clinton years than at any other time in the last 40 or 50 years, now we can’t afford to heat our houses!

McCain/Palin are not for the average American. Have they given you any indication about what they are going to do for you? No. I am a white, middle-aged, middle class woman who has not bought into the hype of Sarah Palin. And now, the Republicans are trying to use Obama’s message of change? Let them come up with their own platform. What change has McCain brought all of these years. And now, with Sarah Palin, if elected, they will take us backwards.

Both of these candidates are for change alright.Changes you wont like. Why are they not talking about their plans to legalize 20-30 million illegal immigrants and increasing foreign work visas by 550,000 next year and thats on top of the 1,000,000+ they already are giving away our jobs to each year. www.numbersusa.com for true facts about immigration, you will be shocked at what these people that we elect are up to.

My wife and I make well under 300,000. We make 80,000 a year between the 2 of us. Under Obama’s plans we will be paying 3000 more dollars a year in federal income tax. We have paid less federal tax with Bush in the office than when Clinton was in. So I don’t see how you say the republicans cater to the rich. The Democrats just want the rich to pay for all the lazy sphincters who don’t want to work

I can’t believe after all this time people still will support Obama. He lied about his religion and slipped the other day admitting to his “Muslim religion”. He worked 142 days in the Senate, as opposed to McCain’s 5+ years, and thinks he’s ready to run the nation!! What a crock! And him putting down Palin is ridiculous, he knows he’s losing and he’s grasping at straws. His supporters even said that if you don’t vote for Obama, you’re a racist. Vote for McCain, the lesser of 2 evils.

I think Obama is like Bill Clinton. He can give great speeches! They mean nothing without experience to do what he says he will do. I wish he would actually answer the questions he gets asked instead of all of the rambling he does trying to act like he answers them. I know the terrorists are hoping he wins. We will have another war right here on our own soil. I have thought long and hard over who to give my vote to and I would rather be safe and free than take a chance on Obama!!!

If you really look past the smile and the young person appeal, you’ll find a person who has never ran a business, or an agency of any kind, never had a successful law practice of any length of time, never has done ANYTHING to qualify for the top job in the USA and I don’t want to pay for his on the job training. Being 53 years old, I remember the Carter administration and the double digit inflation they created that took the Reagan camp 4 years to straighten out. Obama would be a HUGE error.

How can anyone making under $300,000 actually be Republican ? The Republican Party caters to the rich and the rich only, according to McCain, you need to have $5 Million to be rich. So, you and your wife make $190,000, you are technically “poor”. McCain / Palin will not change anything, except making taxes on the rich a non-existant way of life, and you’ll be picking up more of the tab. Wake up, this isn’t about Republicans vs. Democrats, this is a serious issue of the rich wanting it all !

And he claims that he is his brother’s keeper!! When his brother lives in a remotw village in Narobi $12 a year!!! And that he issued an earmark when his wife was promoted @ the UChicago! The man has given good speeches but in all reality he is a DAMN JOKE & The ANTI-CHRIST!!!!!

The reference by Obama yesterday that you “can put lipstick on a pig, and it is still a pig” has taken his campaign to a a new all time low. He has attacked Governor Palin personally, and his campaign says he isn’t making negative comments about her? I think Obama the “one”, has a serious problem with dealing with women. Just look at the way he treated Hillary Clinton. He should stick to issues, and forget attacking women. Just another exmple of his lack of character.

Obama is our only hope for change. How can McCain seriously stand up there and say he is for change when all of his policy are an exact mirror of the polices that have been applied for the last 8 years. More Iraq, More tax cut for the wealthy, No new economic plan, More partisan rhetoric. I am sick and tired of what is happening in the States. I am sick and tired of the American people been fooled by the Republican Propaganda.
