Voice of America Park in West Chester Twp. is scheduled to be the site of a free event that last year drew 3,500 spectators.
The 2007 Concert at the Lake included the Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra and West Chester Symphony Orchestra in a concert that culminated with Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture and a pyrotechnic display by Rozzi's Famous Fireworks. Organizers of this year's concert said they hope it will follow the trend of other repeat events at the popular park.
"For that park, when you schedule something a second year in a row, the attendance typically doubles," said HFSO conductor and CEO Paul John Stanbery.
This year's Concert at the Lake has new attractions aimed at families, said West Chester Chamber Alliance Marketing Director Alison Miuccio. The concert is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., but children's activities and games are planned to start at 4 p.m.
"We purposely wanted to make it more accessible for families to come," Miuccio said.
The concert's program reflects the family focus as well, said Stanbery. The program includes Benjamin Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra," a narrated piece that showcases the different instruments in the orchestra. WARM 98 radio personality Dean Miuccio, the event's master of ceremonies, will narrate the piece.
The program also includes John Williams' theme from the movie "Jaws" and a repeat of last year's successful finale, in which West Chester Symphony Orchestra members joined the HFSO on stage to perform the 1812 Overture and John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever."
"It's a really glorious ending," Stanbery said.
Admission to Concert at the Lake is free. For more information, go to hfso.org or call (513) 895-5151.
