TRENTON — Those old Miller Lite bottles from last weekend's party may be the last you will ever see as company officials announced the Miller and Coors beer brands have officially merged.

SABMiller PLC and Molson Coors Brewing Co. have combined their U.S. and Puerto Rico operations to launch MillerCoors, which began operation July 1.

The merger creates an expanded network of eight breweries — six of which are owned by Miller and two by Coors, said Julian Green, a spokesman for the new company.

"This will create a brewery footprint that will be able to make all the various brands of beer and they will be closer to market," he said. "This is good news for the breweries."

MillerCoors will enjoy the benefits of a combined group of brands, led by Miller Lite and Coors Light, and a plan to cut costs by $500 million annually, company officials said.

That will help the new company, with $7 billion in annual sales and a 29 percent market share, better compete with Anheuser-Busch Cos., which has dominated the U.S. beer business with a 48 percent share.

It's possibly even better news for Miller Brewing's facility in Trenton — one of Ohio's largest brewery which employs 650 people in Butler County.

The facility is already hiring two new team manager positions for the new packaging line in Trenton, according to the MillerCoors Web site.

Green said the Trenton facility may even begin brewing more beer — meaning new jobs — but added it was too early to name specifics.

Miller, based in Milwaukee, and Molson Coors, based in Golden, Colo., announced in October they would form MillerCoors to market and distribute their beers in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Comment: If the new company decides to phase out certain beers, which ones should go?

Hope we don’t have to start straining our Miller Lite to get the “scabs” out. How is that going to work, Miller is a Union Employee company and Coors is all SCABS, as they cut their union guys out many years ago when they were on a legal strike.

F all the corporate beer people and brewery reps. they all suck and are clueless and never get out on the street and meet the retailers to get a feel for what the customers really want. All beer sucks in taste now. I’ll never forget my first sip of beer from my dad’s bottle of Schmidt’s which was brewed in Phila Pa. That was real beer taste. It’s all $$$ now. All you beer corporate guys, reps etc… DO SOME WORK!!!!

I’m a Canadian, and I agree with Jeff. Bring Molson to America! 1 other great brand is Labatt “Maximum Ice.” 7.1 alc/vol. You fine folks in America deserve STRONG BEER! Party on each and everyone. From Terry Lessard. Belleville, Ontario. Canada”

You’ve obviously never had any good american craft beer. Hell even canadas Unibroue… If alchy content is all you’re after.

Go out, try something different. And not a riced up corny mess…

Do they still make Bud Dry?? “Why ask why? Drink Bud Dry.” Even the big guys make really big mistakes! And what the hell is a “brewery footprint”??? Is that “beer-speak”? or has the guy just had a few too many?

It’s not about beer/ale; it’s about marketing, keeping your job and making sure you keep/build your share. If it were about beer, then the article(all you complainers about editing didn’t mention the writer was a woman) would have introduced the whole craft beer explosion. Real beer from all over the country, some people do care about quality and don’t get rich doing it. Yeah, I too am a Canuck and love beer, but I won’t pay big bucks for a commodity. Happy Fourth to Y’all.

Watery cheap-tasting beers like Coors and Bud are good for killing slugs in the garden. And for getting a DUI. That’s about it. May as well drink Buckhorn or Old Milwaukee or Red White & Blue and save your $$$.

In my opinion, both Miller and Coors are cheap-tasting beers that are only good for one thing: beer pong.

What a poorly writtn article. Yea, lets get rid of Miller Lite its only 2nd/3rd best selling beer in US. The two companies combined to save infastructure, and operating costs, not to eliminate brands. If a brand is doing poorly you dont combine with another business to discontinue it or other brands. You just disontinue it.(Examples Miller Lite Ice, Miller Red, Colders 29, etc…)

By TBill

July 2, 2008 2:44 PM | Link to this

What an idiotic opening sentence to the article! Miller Lite is one of the top brands in the country, so why would the new company even consider discontinuing it? Coors used to have a certain cache’ when you couldn’t get it locally, and it was already a fairly light beer. Now you can hardly find it and instead Coors Light is their big brand. I hate it; way too watery. The move is to “craft” beers, ones which sell for $8/six-pack and have a huge profit margin. Beer is way over-priced; 95% water.

Make Molson Canadian and Killian’s Red. They can axe the rest of them. Bud is made in Columbus but they can stop at anytime as far as I’m concerned.
