PAIN AT THE PUMP

Gas prices spike above $4

Many local residents are having trouble footing the substantial bill

Motorists didn't get to enjoy Ohio's lower fuel prices for long, as regular gas spiked above $4 for the first time this summer in Butler and Warren counties.

After boasting some of the lowest gas prices in the nation, stations across the area began raising their prices from the average of $3.85 to $4.09.

The Speedway on Ohio 73 in Franklin was one of the first to raise its price to $4.09 but residents grudgingly filled up anyway.

"I actually just paid for my gas entirely in change I scrounged up because I don't have any money," said Robbie Bauer of Middletown.

"I guess I'm going to have to skateboard more to get places. I can't afford this," he said after turning in his $5 worth of coins.

Down the road at the Swifty station, motorists were lined up down the street waiting to fill up at $3.85.

"People are suffering," said Middletown resident Jeff Willis. "I know people who have to cancel activities their kids are in 'cause they can't pay for gas to take 'em.' "

Over in West Chester Twp., the Shell and Speedway stations near the Interstate 75 exit on Tylersville Road were quick to move prices to $4.09.

"To fill up a tank, it's $60 to $70," said John Abernathy of Monroe as he filled up at the Speedway. "It's pretty tough."

Nationwide, gas prices averaged $4.08, about 4 cents above last week and $1.07 above last year's prices, according to the Energy Information Administration.

President Bush is urging Congress to lift a 1981 offshore drilling ban to eventually accrue about 115 billion barrels of oil from Alaska, the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic and Pacific waters. But that drilling would not begin for years and could destroy natural resources, such as the Arctic Refuge, said Amy Gornberg, an advocate with Environment Ohio, a statewide environmental lobbying group.

It would be wonderful to be able to ride a scooter around to the store or post office etc, the problem is that you would be killed on day one by a driver talking on a cell phone or you would get mashed by a semi. If it was safer, more people would ride scooters and motorcycles around the neighborhoods. I dont mean on 71 or 75 but just in normal neighborhoods. More people would also ride bicycles. Its a no win situation as it stands right now.

let’s go ahead and drill. It’s our future generations that will suffer. What do we care?

Drive a fuel efficient car, drive less and combine trips. And by all means don’t vote for O-BAM-A. He opposes drilling in our own territories and proposes no good alternatives.

The president is the reason people are living on small pay checks and walking, because it is Bushes fault we are into this whole mess and the gas prices. The democrats are for the lower income people and the middleclass and everyone knows that republics are for themselves. I wouldn’t vote on another rebublican if my life depended on it. Did you not notice since Bu$h got into office thats when this country went to hell, the wars, gas prices (bushes family business) and the economy is crap.

You know what Amy Gornberg, god gave us enough to last till he comes back to get us.Don’t worry about the Artic Refuge, worry about the people here living on a much smaller pay check than yours.Think about the people that might need to skateboard to work. tell the democrats to get off their high horse and think about this need and stop fighting president Bush everytime he offers something better for us. Lift the ban!

Just drive less by combining trips to the store.

Remember that the environmentalists are keeping you from being able to use the oil that this country has. Drilling can and is being done safely.

Do you really want to stay dependent on foriegn oil? How long do you think they are going to let us have oil?
