Ohio may extend anti-bias legislation

By William Hershey

Staff Writer

Friday, May 18, 2007

COLUMBUS — Gov. Ted Strickland and House Speaker Jon Husted, R-Kettering, on Thursday both signaled a willingness to consider legislation prohibiting discrimination against all Ohio workers on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identification.

Strickland, a Democrat, and Karen Tabor, Husted's spokeswoman, commented after the governor signed an executive order prohibiting such discrimination in state employment.

Extras

Currently 19 states and the District of Columbia have laws banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and 10 of those states and Washington, D.C., also prohibit discrimination based on gender identity, said Bo Shuff, director of education and public policy for Equality Ohio, a gay rights advocacy group.

Strickland's order defines gender identity as "the gender a person associates with him or herself, regardless of the gender others might attribute to that person."

The order affects about 160,000 state employees and employees of state-supported colleges and universities, said Keith Dailey, Strickland's spokesman. "I want Ohio to be a place where all citizens are valued and included...," Strickland said at the signing ceremony in the Cabinet room.

Tabor, Husted's spokeswoman, said that the House has an anti-discrimination policy similar to Strickland's executive order. She said that legislation extending the same protection to all workers is something that the House could consider.

Such legislation has been proposed in the past without success. Equality Ohio is working on another proposal.

Lynne Bowman, Equality Ohio's executive director, praised Strickland.

"It feels like Christmas," she said.

However, Phil Burress, president of Cincinnati-based Citizens for Community Values, said that the executive order is an "outright joke" and unimportant. His group was behind the 2004 amendment banning same-sex marriage.

For those of you who are afraid of homosexuals teaching your children in Sunday School or at a retreat: who says they are not already teaching? Most likely there is one who is living in fear that he or she may be attacked simply due to who they sleep with in bed.

I disagree with this law. There should be no protected classes. It should be acceptable and legal for me to fire anyone whom I choose for whatever reason I choose. If I want to fire someone for a choice like homosexuality, I should also be able to fire them for the choice of their religion, or political party. If this was the case I would be ably to fire all the lazy Christians who studies have shown to be less intelligent and hard working than Atheists or Jews.

Looking at these comments, I am ashamed to be an Ohioan. I am a black, bisexual woman living, in an area generally considered the most liberal in the state, Cleveland Heights. Because I do live in an area that is diverse as to race, ethnicity, religion and sexual orientation, I often forget that the rest of the state is part of the Bible Belt where it is simply not safe to be anything other than a white, straight, male, Christian. I hope Northeast Ohio eventually secedes.

no…discrimination and hate are a sin. And if you are worried because gay people will finally be protected in this state….you are very sad. GET OVER IT. Gay people live here and we arent going anywhere. So get over your bigotry or move to Iran. This is also OUR STATE, OUR LIVES, and OUR HOME. And the most recent poll shows 68% of Ohioans support legislation that bans discrimination on sexual orientaion and gender identity. so…..YOU LOSE!

My personal feeling is that this legislation will be killed by the Republican-controlled legislature. Don’t forget that, while the morally loose Democratic Governor Strickland has a certain clout, the Republicans still control the state house and senate. The GOP holds a near 2-1 majority in the state senate. So, let’s not get too worried until it actually happens.

As for what I think of this legislation, I think it’s absolute garbage and shouldn’t be permitted. Homosexuality is a sin.

If you are going to church and saying you dont want gay people there, you are not a true Christian. Christ would not have done that. Study his teachings. There is nothing wrong with being gay, and gay people cant help who they are. People like Nancy are so homophobic and ignorant, its pathetic. God help your hateful little bigoted souls. Im tired of hearing your homophobia. GET OVER IT AND MOVE ON, LEAVE US ALONE. you are so hateful! Why so much hate? That is not Christ’s teaching. WRONG!

To Joe: I misspelled my own name last time. I almost didn’t respond, but decided I should. You are very right about pedophiles are in the church as well - in fact, they like it there, because in general, churches are very open places. However, I still would say this - I would not want a homosexual in a church daycare any more than I would want a pedophile in that same setting.

By Joe B.

Nany states that “some” homosexuals are pedophiles. But so are many churchgoers. Don’t try your veiled generalization that homosexuals pose a greater risk to children than heterosexuals. You need to look at the characteristics of pedophiles before you fling that stone.

By Nany

I almost brought up the church issue, but didn’t. I WOULD draw the line in having homosexuals employed in any capacity in a church environment and even daycares, because some homosexuals are pedophiles as well. So I was ONLY address in the public realm and not where I worship. I would fight for that and very well may have to some day, because the Bible in its accuracy has already said that evil will just get worse and it is.

For all the “loving and tolerant” Christians who condone this ungodly legislation. Are you prepared to have homosexuals watch your children in your church nurseries, teach your Sunday School classes, work in the church office, go on church “retreats”, and work in your Christian owned businesses? Who’s converting who?

boo hoo Im gay and need special treatment and attention. Seems to me some homosexuals feel the need to draw excess attention to themselves (look at me Im gay with my 20 rainbow stickers on my escort) if some gays would just blend in with the rest of society crap like this wouldnt be needed, yet they want to be treated the same but they just dont want to act the same. Current laws protect them just another “LAW MAKER” making pointless laws to show they are doing something for special interest

To Roscoe. The Constitution also says all should have the same rights. Yet gays can’t marry. WE pay taxes, support school levys, support straight owned businesses, but we don’t have the same rights. That’s discrimination, which is what we need protected from.

This is not about religious beliefs. Employment is not run on religious beliefs and it sholuldnt be because this is a freee society not a Religious Theocracy like some in the middle east. So i agree…religion is way off topic here and is not a part of this at all. Keep your religious beliefs at home or in your church and learn to share your state with non believers and those that are different than you!

How many are having sex outside of marriage? I don’t like knowing that people around me are doing that, but they are. And if God allows me to have an opprotunity to witness to them, I will do that. I would do that if I worked with a homeosexual and sensed God leading me. If that person didn’t work there, I might not get to tell them of the love of Jesus (I know some will say they don’t need Jesus and that’s okay or some will say I’m being too “approving” of hiring homosexuals).

Read thru list & almost forgot what topic is. I’m a Christian and not ashamed. To stay on the actual topic. A person (no matter what) should be able to work in state positions as long as they are truly qualified, gay or straight. I DON’T believe that gays should have same benfits. Since God has been brought in to the talk, homosexuality is a sin - so is adultery, fornication, gluttony, lying, murder. etc… How many people do we work w/ who sleep with someone else’s husband/wife…..

I agree with steve! this is a much needed protection. It isnt “special rights” as some say. Currently, people arent fired or discriminated against for being straight, but they are for being gay. So it is straight people who have the special right currently of not having to worry about that at work. This bill just levels the playing field for GLBT Ohioans. Ohio is finally becoming a diverse and welcoming state. Maybe our economy will improve next!

This is great. there is a real need for this. All it does is ensure that people are not judged for their sexual orientation when applying for work or when being judged on their performance. If someone does bring a frivilous lawsuit, Im sure the judge and jury will be smart enough to see through it. There are those who will abuse any system. That doesnt justify throwing the whole system out. This will be a great protection and provide peace of mind to thousands of GLBT Ohioans living in fear.

I think I am the only person not resorting to bashing religion or promoting religion. Look at it this way. Two people are interviewed for the same job. Both have similar resumes, qualifications, and both are dressed in a manner that would be deemed unprofessional for the job they are applying for. The only difference is, is one is straight and one is gay. Neither person should feel they were discriminated against, but this opens the door for the gay applicant to file a discrimination lawsuit

I think this is a good thing. We are all here together on this planet and have to learn to survive and get along.

PS. And whose to say that God is the one governing everyone’s thought processes? There are plenty of other religions out there that all have different view points. Remember, there is (supposed) to be a separation of church and state in this country. And that doesn’t mean a lack of moral/ethics if they aren’t Christian.

I did get married and have kids because being raised catholic I never allowed myself to think about the fact that I never fit in with the people I now know are really straight. All the people who were my friends in High school somehow happen to be the gay ones, as I found out years later. Once I allowed myself to think about why I was unhappy and close to a nervous breakdown, I knew I was made/born a lesbian. I never really wanted to be with men, I wanted women.

I think alot of people posting on here have a rather limited view of what Chritianity is all about. Christ would never judge nor cast away anyone. It’s a sad day when people deem an abstract concept as a means to make sense of a concrete reality. What this ruling does, is guarantee fair appraisal in the workplace, for the people using this as a pulpit to attack gays and lesbians while calling themselves God Fearing and Christian, SHAME ON YOU. Looks like you are a follower of Moses and not Christ (Christ never once mentioned homosexuality)!! In Genesis it was also deemed holy to have hundreds of wives! So why is it now a “sin” to have more than one? King Solomon had over 800 wives… was he “sinning”? Are you “sinning” by only choosing one? Also slavery deemed fine in the eyes of God back then… should we take those verses literally too???

What the fuss is all about is “Check in Genesis where Sodom and Gomorah was destroyed by God for thier pervertedness. Then go to the new testament and you will find several scriptures on homosexuality. Then then go to the scripture about Mary Magdalin where Jesus told her to “Do the sin no more” The word sodomy came from Sodom the city which was destroyed by God. This is only a beginning of what the fuss is about.

The hospital says oh I’m sorry we don’t recognize heterosexual marriages here so you aren’t able to see her because you aren’t “family”. There should be the same consequences for everyone, no matter who might be discriminated against. The Bible teaches that Christians should judge other Christians but we don’t have a right to judge non-Christians. Christians should show love toward EVERYONE, there is not a single human being whom God does not love. The Bible does mention same sex (sexual) relationships as being wrong, although it does not say it is a sin that a person is attracted to the same sex.

Well, I don’t believe one chooses orientation. Too many instances of kids knowing they were different when they were very young. BUT - there is a difference between living your lifestyle and FLAUNTing that lifestyle. If you’re gay, just let people wonder - don’t shout it out to them. About the “trannies” - can you imagine your college professor being one? How do you expect students to focus on the material being presented instead of the anomaly presenting?

What ever happen to the concept of equal protection under the law? I can hire a woman, minority, or a gay, but I can rarely fire them as they all want a free ride by suing me, even if they are the worst employee in the company. As an employer, when this happens, you make life miserable for them by reducing their hours, giving them the worst hours, or not granting pay increases, so they will quit. Then they go away and become your competitor’s problems.

When in reality it does affect everything in the world in which I live from the obnoxiuos commercials, Girls Gone Wild to the sex classes taught in schools which teach Gay and Straight sex classes. Hopefully this law will be challenged in the courts. Better off let us vote like we did on gay marriages.

This is a great and diverse state. Im glad to see this bill. it WILL ensure that we focus on skill and ability for job openings and not on someone’s sexual orientation. Gay and transgender people need to be protected. This list of comments proves that. There is so much hate against them out there. Bravo Strickland! There truly is room for EVERYONE to feel at home in Ohio. That is truly what makes a great state!

This is just going to open up the door for more frivolous law suits against companies. We already have them in racial decisions. A white man or woman gets a job over the black man or woman it’s racism. Now it’s going to be sexual orientation and it well all be a part of “Affirmative Action” or a better word, quotas. Why don’t we go back and hire base on ability, experience and education. Novel idea, huh?

Why is it that when certain people who carry the Great Commission to others are considered hateful? They speak only the truth from the Word of God, the infalliable Word of God. He is the way , truth, and the life. They want you to know what the Word of God says about your future. They love you as does God. If your mother didn’t warn you of the fire as you were growing up, does that mean she was judging you and hated you?

Life Style is a choice. Why did we need a new law? Except only to flaunt attention to quear lifestyle. It is pathetic. I bet ya dont like Pres.Bush either.

Pearl is funny. Evolution is real… that is funnier. Your belief is flawed and that is sad. Move to Mass. and leave Ohio the respectable state that it is. In fact, all those who agree with Strickland get in a bus and let Ted Kennedy drive. Bring your swimsuits.

I’d rather be a working Republican that is nuts than a Liberal with no job and no nuts.

Dan and Ambrose: Go read a science book!!! you and people like you are religious extremists and extremists are destroying the world. From Christian extremists to Islamic extremists. If you believe the way you do, believe it…you have the freedom to that. But please leave the rest of us to our freedoms. let the world be. If you truly believe you are right, you have nothing to worry about. Maybe your world is based on the Bible. Not everyone’s is. You cannot and should not control the world.

It is about time that Ohio finally recognizes everyone! I feel that people who look at this as a “religious issue” need to re-think. I am a strong believer in the bible and in god, but what many people don’t take into consideration is the fact that the bible was erected thousands of years ago. Many people misinterpret things in the bible at times, (not saying that I am completely in understanding) and discriminate others based on religious views. I feel that the state did an excellent job!

Thank you Gov. Strickland for doing the right thing. For you folks from the anti-equality camp, “If you cannot do good for someone, at least do them no harm.” Peace form the MoonDr

And now, this site has become a forum for all the want to be preachers in the area. We have drifted totally off the subject and I leave you to your ranting about gays and the Bible. Nothing wrong with that but leave it for church, not in a public forum. Wouldn’t it be better to tend to your own business and leave other people alone? Nothing to be gained by all the bashing of people who don’t see it your way is there? It’s a no win war for either side.

Wow Ambrose. Wow. Hold on, one more time. Wow. All I can say is that these kind of articles really make the bigots come out of the woodwork.

Threatening an entire gender. That is something else entirely. Wow. Wow. Straight from the Middle Ages. No, the stone age. Wow.

Pearl: You helped make a point. There are many “gods” and many “religions”. The Holy Bible stated that it would be so. And evolution is not justified by the fact that man has invented many religions. Do you really believe that our existence just happened out of chance due to a big bang in the universe?

Dan: thank you for your concern. We have all heard you loud and clear. Now go and leave us alone. We know how you believe, and that you believe you are right no matter what. so you have won! Congratulations!

If women want to have any chance at all to keep the gains you have made, you need to learn to start compromising with men. This means paying a bit more attention to God and the bible. These societal problems are issues because of you. God intended that women be the nurturers and supporters of men, not the dominating gender you are trying to be. You push in politics, at work, and on the road. One of these days men will push back if this keeps up. Let’s work together now before YOU regret it.

Parris: You only think you have freedom from religion. True, you have the freedom to choose. But, someday you will be judged for your choice - as we all will. Therefore, you really do not have freedom from religion - none of us do. Some may reject the thought. But, in the end some will praise God in Heaven while others will face a torment in Hell. So, believe it now, or believe it later. I’m not judging - just sharing my beliefs.

Dan: Correction - there are many Gods and many would like to believe that their ‘one’ is the ‘one’. Correction - Evolution theory has been long proven and is taught to every schoolchild in the world today. Can’t say that about your religion can you? - because there are many religions telling different stories but only one evolution theory. Done.

No! I have freedom FROM RELIGION. I dont have to practice religion if I dont want to. This is a free country. We are free to choose. you are wrong. And you all are missing the point. The bible was written in a different culture. They didnt understand or see things the way we do today. We would have to totally live like they did to be considered Christians accourding to them. So…NO PORK, NO working on Sunday, etc. We might as well go ALL THE WAY! Everything the Bible says.

For those of you who question conservative structured religions, bravo, atleast half of their message is wrong. Those who shun what the bible says and use the term “bible thumper”, shame on you. The bible is the true word of the Lord and should be heeded. I’m not in a position with enough knowledge or right to comment on the gay issues. I can say that just as Eve was wrong to pull an apple from the tree though, that women are again pulling from the wrong tree with the fight for equality. Cont..

However: Individuals looking at Paul’s writing from a human rights perspective might reject the author’s belief that homosexuality is beyond the normal — particularly when Paul’s support for the oppression of women (e.g. 1 Corinthians 14:34 - 35), and his acceptance of slavery as a normal social practice in (Philemon 1:15 to 16) are considered.

Parris: You have freedom OF religion not FROM religion. And yes - God is judging us all - whatever we CHOOSE to be - Jews, atheists, Christians, gays, murderers, embezzlers, wife beaters…..That’s really the main point.

Well I am gay and I am not “limp wristed” or wear womens clothes. I do not prey on straight people. I expect to be able to live my life as I see fit without harrassment. What I find funny is we are everywhere. We are Doctors, Lawyers, Policeman, Fireman, Contractor’s and Truck Drivers. We go about ourlives as most people do. We own homes, pay our taxes, and live among you all and YOU DO NOT KNOW IT! WE ALSO VOTE!!!

Let God do the judging. YOU ARE SINNING BY JUDGING! Leave people alone and let God Judge them then! And Not evreyone believes in the Bible litereally and we dont have to! This is not Iran. This is not a theocracy. We have freedom from religion here. If you believe it, fine. Dont push your views on the rest of us! Leave us alone! By the way…the Bible also says it was also a sin to sit in the same pew as a woman who is menstrating. And to eat pork..Anyone believe this still?!!

Although God has clearly revealed Himself in creation, human beings have suppressed this knowledge. “They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator…” (1:25). The result of this, Paul says, is that “God gave them over to shameful lusts” (1:26a). He then illustrates this with reference to homosexual behavior:

Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. Romans 1:26b-27 (TNIV)

GET OVER IT!!! Same benefits and same rights…yes! It is only fair. We should ban hateful ignorant people from having the same benefits, if anyone! Get over yourselves and your holy roller rants. Jesus said nothing about homosexuality….but he did say alot about love. Im tired of hearing your hatefulness…get a life and leave people alone!

FYI: Jesus never said a single word about gays, lesbians, bisexuals or transgenders.

Jesus actually condemns those who condemn others and told us NOT TO JUDGE OTHERS (Matt 7:1 – 5).

Judging seems to be a fundamentalist’s favorite past time. There’s also the story of The Pharisee & The Publican (the religious guy who thought he was better than the tax gatherer, who knew he was a sinner).

It seems the religious self-righteous Pharisee was put at the end of the line. (Luke 18: 9 – 14)
