HAMILTON — Those with concerns or comments about a proposal to ban teenagers from using indoor tanning salons in the city will have their chance to speak out to city leaders tonight.

The Hamilton City Council is holding a two-hour special work session on the topic from 5 to 7 p.m. on the first floor of One Renaissance Center, 345 High St.

The council is not set to vote on the measure until Oct. 25. However, officials have said the vote could be tabled should council members feel they need more information.

Under the proposal, minors would be prohibited from using indoor tanning salons within the city unless they have a doctor's prescription.

If passed by the council, the measure would be the first of its kind in the nation. Ohio allows minors to use tanning salons as long as parental permission is provided. Some states ban indoor tanning under certain ages. France and Switzerland ban all minors.

In early September, a group of local physicians asked city leaders to consider the teen ban. They have said they plan to approach the Legislature following elections about passing a statewide ban.

The physicians argue that exposure to ultraviolet radiation early in life greatly increases the risk of developing skin cancer. They say indoor tanning should be regulated just as the government puts age restrictions on tobacco and alcohol purchases.

However, those with ties the indoor tanning industry argue that Ohio's laws are effective and well enforced. In addition, they say the medical data used by local physicians is misleading and out of date.

Each side of the debate is expected to get one hour each to make arguments this evening. Typically, council allows individuals up to five minutes of uninterrupted speaking at the podium.

Written comments also will be accepted by the council, officials said.

The council's regular meeting is slated to begin at 7 p.m. in council chambers.
