The weather was perfect as the Fairfield High School Marching band took to the field Monday night to host for their 21st year, the Summer Music Games in Cincinnati.

The marching band holds this competition every year as a fund raiser, with the revenues from ticket sales being split between the Fairfield High School Marching Band and Drum Core International. This year "we set a record with over 2,000 tickets for pre-sale and our walk up crowd looked great since the weather was cooperating," according to Contest Director Bruce Brown,

Brightly colored flags and wardrobes accompanied the unique ensembles of Monday night's performances as the spectators clapped and cheered for the six national teams competing for first place.

"For those who see that 11-minute performance, there is so much that goes into it, these kids practice for hours and hours, pretty much all day long," Brown said.

Drum Core is very competitive and as many as 600 youth audition for only 35 available spots on a typical squad.

The Blue Coats, a marching band based in North Canton, Ohio, took home first place.

Blue Coat member Martin Godoy thought their performance was, "our best one yet...it gave me the chills." This was Godoy's first year being part of the Blue Coats and he said he regrets not joining earlier

He is enjoying the experience of being part of such as group and traveling along with the other members even though he is far way from his home in Arlington, Texas.

Laura Rockman, a member of the Blue Coats for five years, said Monday night was a great performance and notices how, "we have really stepped it up this season."

Another attraction Monday was a clinic that was held by the Glassmen group, of Toledo. Brown said the Glassmen show provides "a great opportunity to learn techniques, skills and discipline from some of the best educators in the world."

With more than 150 volunteers and months of planning and perpetration, the Fairfield Marching Band's hard work paid off as it raised an expect $20,000. As Josh Burton, upcoming senior and trumpet player for the Fairfield High School Marching band points out, "the Core show educates people about the talent that is out there as well as being motivational to get our band to strive harder."
