14-year old Fairfield Idol sings her way to glory

By Ken-Yon Hardy, Staff Writer

FAIRFIELD — Taylor Hicks might be the most recent American Idol winner, but 14-year-old Shelly Lutz reigns as Idol queen on the Village Green.

Lutz was the winner of Monday night's Fairfield Idol competition, which was part of Red, White and Kaboom Independence Day festivities at Village Green in Fairfield.

She edged out 14-year-old Fairfield Freshman student Kayla Mainus in front of a crowd of close to 500 as she sang her rendition of "Black Horse and a Cherry Tree."

Lutz said she'd like to try to be an American Idol on television in the near future. She said she chose "Black Horse and a Cherry Tree" because it was the song of choice from her favorite runner-up American Idol performer.

"I heard the song on American Idol and I like Katherine McPhee," she said. "I'm a huge fan of Idol."

Lutz said this was her second time competing in Fairfield Idol.

"I think the crowd accepted me," she said. "I (had) a lot of fans and family come out to support me."

"Both of the girls did really well," said Fairfield resident Molly Reingold, who was in attendance with her 2-year-old son Jayden. "They have real mature voices."

For Christina Rose, Fairfield Idol was an excellent chance for her to hear some good music.

"I could have listened to both of these girls sing all day," said the 35-year-old Fairfield resident. "I wouldn't even mind them singing during the fireworks."
