HAMILTON — When students, staff and faculty walk into the first floor study lounge of Mosler Hall at Miami University Hamilton, they will notice something different.
New chairs, new tables and new carpeting are a given, but most noticeably will be the name of the room — the Jack Rhodes Study.
On Wednesday, more than 120 people attended a reception and dedication to honor MUH's former executive director.
"I'm overwhelmed," Rhodes said. "When I got the letter from the board of trustees, I was genuinely surprised. I thought it was very nice of them and it was unexpected."
Rhodes said he never imagined he would be able to walk into a room bearing his name. He said he believed the positive strides the university took while he was serving as executive director from 1995 to 2002 may have been the reason he was receiving the honor.
"Maybe it's a way of saying during the period that I was here that we accomplished a few things," he said. "We got some initiatives started and some of those initiatives like the Multicultural Center, the bus route that we have between Oxford and Hamilton and the Conservatory ... continue to help the campus and the city."
Current MUH Executive Director Daniel Hall said the study lounge was in dire need of remodeling and the university was honored to be able to name it after Rhodes.
"We wanted to replace the 1970's institutional feel of the space with more modern, functional and comfortable seating where students can gather and study," Hall said. "We are very pleased to announce that the newly decorated space will carry the name of ... Dr. Jack Rhodes."
