HAMILTON — Local residents were among the 26 recipients of Miami University's President's Distinguished Service Award.
Ellen Shannon, a sophomore integrated social studies major from Oxford and Madeleine Barilleaux, a junior political science and journalism major from Hamilton, both were named.
"It's an honor that I was chosen," said Shannon, who was cited for her work at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
"I was shocked at first, but then I was happy because I was chosen out of all of the employees to win the award."
Barilleaux, who was awarded for her work for the division of university advancement, said she was ecstatic to be recognized.
"I am really excited and honored to have received the award," she said.
Miami University-Hamilton student Scott Liebhaber also received the President's Distinguished Service Award. He was honored for his work with children who are enrolled at the Living Water Ministries after school program.
"I really do not necessarily think that I deserved (an) award for the volunteer work I did because I think everyone who can should volunteer," he said. "(It's) a great experience.
"The feeling you get for knowing that you did help someone is more (than) any award."
Dr. Shelly Jarrett-Bromberg, assistant professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies at MUH, nominated Liebhaber and said he was deserving of the award.
"Scott, who put in lots of 'overtime' had a profound impact upon his young charges at Living Water," she said. "(He) is an outstanding example of what we hope occurs with and for our students.
"(Scott) has taken his learning to a higher plane by sharing his knowledge and his compassion with many other communities."
Among those awarded are: Kiley Bonk, Sarah Brodhead, Joseph Coury, Pulkit Datta, Maressa Leigh Dixon, John Duggan, Jonathan Franz, Christopher Good, Jessica Hohman, Ethan Silva Karp, Justin Katko, Thomas Koopman, David Mitchell, Tamika Nunley, Frank Penn, Stephen Rayo, Timothy Reynolds, Leah Rupp, Jamey Rutschilling, Megan Ryan, Jessica Siefert, Alexandra Wolfe and Lisa York.
