HAMILTON — After 29 years in business, the owners of the Deli Sandwich Shoppe on Third Street have sold the company to another Hamilton family.
After building up the shop, moving down the street, raising kids and surviving a fire, Dick and Connie Glassmeyer decided that it was time to slow down.
"We both have health issues and we decided that it's just time to go," Dick said, "It's just a matter of age and health."
Although they're going to miss their employees and customers, they said, they're not going to miss the work. In fact, Dick teased, his wife may miss it less than anyone else.
"We bought it back in 1977 when my boss was having trouble running it," Dick said. "The first week, Connie cried and she tried to get out of it. Well, now she can go."
Over the years though, the couple grew to love the restaurant and its employees and customers.
"Our customers have been the greatest," Connie said. "They have been family. We will miss them so much. We want to thank all of them for supporting us through the years and just being our friends."
The Edwards family took over operation of the restaurant and Connie's Catering this week. Greg Edwards purchased the business with his brother Doug and Doug's wife Aimee.
The family currently runs two catering companies out of Cincinnati. The Edwards were raised in Hamilton and Doug and Aimee live here.
"We were just looking for a kitchen in this area for our catering business, but what we found here was a well-established, well-ran, clean, high quality food service operation," Greg said. "This place has shown itself to have a strong, loyal customer base."
Aimee said customers should expect to get the same quality and service they got under the Glassmeyers. "We're determined to do that," she said.
The family has some plans for expanding the restaurant's offerings. Some new ideas include a call-ahead carry-out dinner service, downtown delivery and the addition of home-baked goods.
