RedHawks rally to nab home win

OXFORD — Junior center fielder Ryan Brenner sparked a rally with a bases clearing triple in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Miami to a 6-3 win over Eastern Kentucky in the RedHawks’ home opener. Miami (9-11) won its third straight game and second straight against the Colonels (6-15).

Freshman lefthander Alex Brown started for the RedHawks and cruised through the first four innings. He left after five innings with a career-high five strikeouts.

Fellow freshman Seth Varner picked up the win to move to 1-1 after pitching 1 2/3 perfect innings with one strikeout. Brandon Adkins picked up his third save by retiring the final two batters of the game.

Bryce Redeker finished the game 4-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in and a stolen base, while Brad Gschwind and Brenner had two hits apiece.

Miami opens Mid-American Conference play this weekend against Central Michigan. The series, originally scheduled for Mt. Pleasant, has been moved to Oxford due to winter weather. Games at McKie Field are set for 3 p.m., Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.

Ronai steps down as Middies coach

MIDDLETOWN — High School basketball coach Bob Ronai has stepped down as the Middletown High School boys varsity basketball coach.

In his eight years as Middie coach, Ronai had a 97-79 overall record. His teams won 70 percent of their games (78-33) in the past five seasons.
