MIDDLETOWN — Thanks to the rewards of an endowment fund started six years ago, the Ohio State University Alumni Club of Butler County can reward five area high school seniors with a combined $4,300 in scholarships at its annual banquet on Thursday, June 11, at the Manchester Inn.
“We started the fund in December of 2003 at Ohio State,” explained club president Al Kulick. “This is the second year where the endowment fund is paying back. Since we’re earning money from it now, we decided to add another scholarship this year.”
The scholarships are available to Butler County high school seniors who enroll at Ohio State. Kulick says the applicants are subjected to a series of tests which help determine the scholarship winners.
“But they don’t have to sing Carmen Ohio,” he said, in reference to the school’s alma mater. “We all do that at the end of the banquet.”
The radio voice of the Buckeyes, Paul Keels, will be the guest speaker. In 2007, the Cincinnatian was inducted into the Radio Television Broadcasters’ Hall of Fame of Ohio. He was also named co-winner of the Ohio Sportscaster of the Year Award, by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association of America that same year.
Tickets are $35 and still available for the event. The casual affair will open with a cash bar social hour at 6 p.m. Dinner is set for 7 p.m. with the evening program to follow. Kulick said there will be raffles and a silent auction taking place throughout the evening.
All proceeds from the night will help benefit the Butler County OSU Scholarship program.
