8-year-old proves slow and steady wins race

Have you heard the story about the tortoise and the hare? You know, where the slow and steady tortoise claimed an upset win over the speedier hare (who was rumored to have failed tech inspection after the race anyhow)?

Well, at Tri-State Dragway, 8-year-old race driver Trey Sizemore from Bright, Ind., has been the proverbial tortoise in the Junior Dragster division this season.

Take last weekend’s regular points event over the 1/8-mile strip in Ross Twp. Sizemore wasn’t the fastest driver out there by a long shot, but he was definitely the steadiest bracket racer among the junior drag pilots.

With a cob-web filling 12.93 second dial-in number, the first-year driver had almost a 3-second head start over Cincinnati’s Matthew Fanning, and managed to win the race by .0018 second. Sizemore glazed the 1/8-mile distance with a 49.19-mph pass to claim his second win of the season.

Reports say the winner’s trophy is half as tall as Sizemore.

Tri-State runs a regular points program Sunday, July 19. Gates open at 9:30 a.m. Time trials start a half-hour later, and racing gets under way at 1 p.m. Spectators and crew members get in for $10. Kids 11 and younger get in free.

Mighty Mouse saves the day at Tri-State

The Amelia-based brothers of Kevin and Jason Bishop turned a rare feat in a recent Pro Division final at Tri-State. Well, rare for most people. The Bishops have had this sort of thing happen before.

They share driving duties in a cherry-red 1969 Chevy Camaro they call “Mighty Mouse.” They both enter that weekend’s event, and both drivers use the same car.

On July 5, Kevin used “Mighty Mouse” to defeat Hamilton’s Brian Hendrickson in one semifinal; and Jason edged Xenia’s hotshoe Doug Caplinger in the other semi.

Two Bishops in the final. One Mouse. What to do?

The brothers simply took home both the first- and second-place prize money and split it.

Rose’s winning streak now at nine

Middletown Legends Series racer Ty Rose has won nine races in a row. He’s scheduled to race Saturday night in Louisville, Ky., then he heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway in Suwanee, Ga., for the Bandolero Nationals the following weekend. Rose is ranked No. 5 in the country with 17 wins in 20 races.

Stewart, Kahne
to race at Eldora

NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne will be spending their off week racing Saturday and Sunday in the Kings Royal weekend at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg.
