Miami University’s Cody Reichard was named National Player of the Week by Inside College Hockey on Tuesday, Nov. 10.
One award Reichard won’t win is National Braggart of the Week.
The sophomore goaltender from from Celina stopped 47-of-49 shots last weekend in Miami’s 3-1 and 5-1 sweep at Michigan’s Yost Ice Arena, one of the most intimidating venues in college hockey. The Wolverines peppered Reichard with 14 power plays and scored on just one of them.
Listen to Reichard talk after Tuesday’s practice, however, and you’d think he was little more than a spectator to the first sweep by an opponent at Michigan in 45 series.
“It’s an honor, obviously,” Reichard said of the award, “but a lot of credit goes to my teammates who help me out a lot blocking shots.
“I always feel like I can play a little better,” Reichard said. “The defense has been solid.”
Although Reichard ranks fourth in the nation in goals-against average (1.578) and has started the RedHawks’ last four games, he doesn’t assume he will play both nights of this weekend’s home series against Ferris State.
In fact, he assumes he will not play in both games.
“I’m sure we’ll be back rotating,” Reichard said, referring to himself and teammate Connor Knapp, Miami’s other sophomore goalie who was ill last weekend and did not play in the Michigan series. “We’ve got a good one-two punch going.”
There should not be a problem with the top-ranked RedHawks having an emotional letdown following the sweep over Michigan, Reichard said.
“They’re not an easy team to play,” he said of Ferris State, which stands 7-3-0, 2-2-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. “We have a lot of respect for them. I think we have some momentum, but they’re a good team and have some momentum too.
“The college season being so short, there is never a weekend when you can let down,” he added. “It’s too important.”
Miami (8-1-1, 5-1-0 CCHA) will face Ferris State at Steve Cady Arena at 7:35 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, and 7:05 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14.
Sweeps for volleyball
Miami’s volleyball team swept last weekend’s matches over Bowling Green (3-1) and Western Michigan (3-2) and also swept the MAC East Division individual honors.
Senior Megan Griffin was named Offensive Player of the Week after compiling a .659 hitting percentage in the two matches, and junior Michele Metzler was named Defensive Player of the Week after holding the defense to a .196 hitting percentage.
Miami has won five in a row and is 16-10 overall, 11-3 in the MAC, but still trails Ohio by two matches with two to play.
The RedHawks close out their regular season with two home matches, 7 p.m. Friday against Ohio and 5 p.m. Saturday against Kent State.
Shots don’t hit home
The field hockey team outshot Ohio University 24-6 last Saturday but still lost to the Bobcats 2-1 in the MAC Championship Game, the second straight year Miami has been eliminated by Ohio.
RedHawk seniors Katie Brightwell and Mary Hull and sophomore Amanda Seeley were named to the all-tournament team.
The loss ended Miami’s season with a 13-10-0 record, 7-3-0 in the MAC.
