CINCINNATI — The 19th-ranked Cincinnati Bearcats men’s basketball team dominated the Miami RedHawks in only one respect in their 63-59 win Thursday, Dec. 10: free-throw shooting.

It wasn’t so much the shooting for the Bearcats as the ability to get to the line.

Overall, 21 fouls were called against Miami and only 10 were called against UC. The Bearcats were 21-of-32 from the line.

The RedHawks? Try 2-for-3.

“Coach (Mick) Cronin always stresses getting to the free-throw line more,” Cincinnati sophomore Yancy Gates said. “He emphasizes that a lot in practice.

“I think we were more aggressive going to the basket (than Miami),” he added.

‘A lot better’ effort

Despite Miami’s third straight loss, the RedHawks acknowledged some improved play against the Bearcats, especially compared to their 64-42 loss at home to Temple on Tuesday.

“We played very poorly versus Temple,” Miami junior Nick Winbush said. “We played a lot better tonight.”

Miami (2-7) had 14 turnovers, which isn’t bad, considering the all-out pressing and trapping UC’s (6-1) defense threw at the RedHawks.

At first that defense seemed to confuse the RedHawks, who scored only six points in the first 10 minutes.

“We were a little timid instead of blowing straight past them,” Miami senior point guard Kenny Hayes said.

Another new lineup

Miami coach Charlie Coles used his fourth different starting lineup in the last five games on Thursday when senior Adam Fletcher began the game at center in place of sophomore Julian Mavunga.

It was Fletcher’s first start since Miami’s first two games of the season.

The RedHawks who have started all nine games are Hayes, Winbush and junior guard Rodney Haddix II.

Off the mark

This was not a good night for shooters.

Miami shot only 41.4 percent from the floor (24-for-58), which was a little less than UC’s 41.7 percent (20-for-48).

The Bearcats were much worse from the 3-point stripe, hitting only 2-of-12. Miami wasn’t great either, hitting 9-of-27.

Facts & figures

Freshman Lance Stephenson was the only Bearcat player to score during a span of 6 minutes, 34 seconds in the first half. During that time he had 10 straight points, and the RedHawks scored nine ... Miami and UC combined to miss 13 of their first 14 shots from the 3-point arc.
