Eaton leads baseball team to weekend sweep
OXFORD — Adam Eaton went 4-for-6 with four RBIs on Sunday, April 25, as the Miami University baseball team completed a weekend sweep of visiting Akron with a 16-5 triumph at McKie Field.
Eaton was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle for the RedHawks, who scored 10 runs in the fourth inning and improved to 20-20 overall and 7-8 in the Mid-American Conference.
Also homering for MU were Kyle Weldon (three hits, RBI) and Kevin Bower (two RBIs). Adding to the offense were Jordan Jankowski (two RBIs), Brad Gschwind (three hits, RBI) and Ryan Brenner (two hits, two RBIs).
Mac Thoreson allowed two earned runs in eight innings to get the mound win, with the Zips falling to 16-22, 2-13.
The RedHawks travel to Bowling Green on Friday to begin a weekend series.
McGivney’s blast powers softball team to 3-2 victory
OXFORD — Jenna McGivney’s first home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fourth inning, lifted Miami University’s softball team to a 3-2 victory over visiting Bowling Green on Sunday, April 25.
Jessica Simpson tossed a seven-hitter with seven strikeouts for the RedHawks, who moved to 23-20 overall and 8-6 in the Mid-American Conference. The Falcons are 10-20, 6-8.
MU travels to Western Michigan on Friday.
Women’s tennis team nets MAC regular-season title
TOLEDO — Miami University claimed its second straight Mid-American Conference regular-season women’s tennis title Saturday, April 24, defeating host Toledo 7-0 at the Laurel Hill Tennis Club.
The RedHawks (15-6, 8-0) won their 17th straight match in league play, duplicating their undefeated campaign of last year.
MU won eight of nine matches overall, but none more impressive than Megan Martzolf’s at No. 3 singles. With the 6-3, 6-0 win, the junior from Indianapolis finished the regular season undefeated at 21-0.
The RedHawks will open defense of its MAC tournament title Friday at 10 a.m. at Western Michigan, facing either Ball State or Northern Illinois.
Women’s track and field team rolls to 11 event wins
OXFORD — The Miami University women’s track and field team captured 11 event titles, including seven of eight field events, on Saturday, April 24, at its RedHawk Invitational, held at overcast Rider Track.
Several RedHawks competed at the prestigious Penn Relays on Thursday and Friday, sitting out Saturday’s meet to rest.
Miami faced a limited field that included athletes from the University of Cincinnati and Cedarville University.
Sophomore Samantha Gable claimed two event titles, taking first in the shot put with a personal-best heave of 45-5.75/13.86m, which ranks her sixth all-time at Miami, and first in the hammer throw with another personal-best distance of 177-2/54.02m, which places her third all-time in the hammer among RedHawks.
Miami returns to action next weekend at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Classic.
Men’s track and field team shines in RedHawk meet
OXFORD — The Miami University men’s track and field shined by winning seven events and setting several personal records Saturday, April 24, in its RedHawk Invitational at Rider Track.
The RedHawks competed against a limited field consisting of athletes from Cincinnati, Cedarville and Morehead State.
Miami is back in action next weekend at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Classic.
