Miami baseball, softball teams earn DH sweeps

MU baseball completes sweep

OXFORD — The Miami University baseball team continues to put up huge offensive numbers. The RedHawks beat Buffalo 18-15 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday, then blanked the Bulls 11-0 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Eric Darlage went 5-for-6 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs. Adam Eaton was 4-for-5 with two homes runs, three RBIs and four runs. Jon Edington went 3-for-5 with a home run, a triple, three RBIs and two runs. And Ryan Curl was 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs.

Ryan Campbell got the win in relief, and Jordan Jankowski picked up his fourth save of the year.

In the second game, Edgington homered again, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Chris Nadeau, Tommy Nurre, Brad Gschwind and Curl also had multi-hit games for Miami, which improved to 20-15 overall and 10-5 in the Mid-American Conference.

Jankowski returned to the mound as the starter and picked up the win to improve to 4-0.

Buffalo fell to 14-23, 3-11 MAC.

MU softball sweeps NIU

OXFORD — The Miami University softball team swept Northern Illinois 4-3 and 7-0 Saturday.

In the first game, the RedHawks (26-17 overall, 12-4 Mid-American Conference) got an RBI double from Lauren Odom and a sacrifice fly from Kelly Cabana to rally for the victory. Jessica Simpson earned the win to improve to 18-9, and Meredith Linch notched her first save.

Meghan Mawn and Alexis Javier each added a pair of hits.

In the nightcap, Jordan McElroy went 4-for-4 with three runs scored to lead the way. Sarah Billstrom (3-for-4, two RBIs, run) and Odom (2-for-3, double, run, three RBIs) led the way.

Linch earned the win with a complete-game six-hitter.

Miami’s Mirochna breaks record

OXFORD — Amanda Mirochna shaved two seconds off the Miami University 1,500 meter record with a winning time of 4 minutes, 26.77 seconds Saturday in the All-Ohio Championships.

Mirochna beat the previous record of 4:29.14, which was set by Julie Rhoda in 1993. Her time also qualified her to the NCAA Mideast Regional.

Alexis Lape and Katie Lenahan also won qualified to the regional. Lape won the the 400 hurdles in 1:00.78, and Lenahan toook third in the 800 (2:09.80).
