OXFORD — Last December, the Miami University basketball team had a surprise in store for Temple. The RedHawks beat the Owls on their own court by 16 points.

On Tuesday, Dec. 8, the Owls returned the favor with interest.

Temple used a 25-0 run in the first half to overwhelm the RedHawks 64-42, Miami’s most lopsided loss at Millett Hall in eight years.

“We schooled them a little bit up there,” Miami coach Charlie Coles said of last year’s game at Temple. “But we only got a master’s (degree). They got a doctorate tonight.”

Temple coach Fran Dunphy, who has guided the Owls to back-to-back NCAA tournament berths, remembered his team’s 68-52 loss to Miami on Dec. 3, 2008.

“It was close for a while, and then they just hammered us in the last 3-4 minutes,” Dunphy said. “It was nice for us to come back here and play much better basketball.”

It wasn’t so nice for the RedHawks, who lost their second straight at home and fell to 2-6 overall, the first time a Miami men’s basketball team has lost six of its first eight regular-season games since the 1987-88 squad.

“It was painful to watch,” Coles said, “but if we don’t learn anything from that, then that’s bad. (Temple) put on a show tonight. In the first half, I was a little embarrassed. In the second half, I started taking notes.”

Lavoy Allen, who led Temple with 15 points, scored back-to-back baskets to ignite the Owls’ 25-0 run, but it was 6-foot-3 senior guard Luis Guzman who powered it with 12 points, hitting four 3-point baskets to help give Temple a
30-6 lead.

Nick Winbush had a double-double for Miami, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Kenny Hayes also scored 10 points.

This was the RedHawks’ biggest losing margin at home since Nov. 28, 2001, when Xavier won at Millett Hall
87-58.

The Owls rarely shoot as well as they did last night. It was good for Miami to get this game out of their system.
