HAMILTON — The Hamilton Joes got an early start with the fireworks on Friday, July 3. You could practically see the sparks flying off their wood bats.
A crowd of 179 watched Hamilton’s Joe Sullivan hit the first home run at Foundation Field this season as the Joes scorched the Chillicothe Capitals 21-8 in a nonleague game.
Sullivan and B.J. Willis each drove in five runs for Hamilton (7-13), which roughed up three Chillicothe hurlers with 21 hits.
“We needed that, a break-out game,” Joes manager Darrel Grissom said. “We were looking for that.
“We had some big hits tonight,” he noted. “Those are the kind of hits we’ve been looking for all year, hits with men on base.”
Three of Hamilton’s biggest hits were Sullivan’s three-run homer in an eight-run second inning, a three-run double by Willis in the fourth and a three-run double by Macky Cianciolo in the eighth.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been a part of a game like that,” said Sullivan, who finished 2-for-5. “It’s amazing.”
Willis has been almost unstoppable over the last three games. The former Princeton High School standout went 4-for-6 with two doubles.
“I’m just seeing the ball real well,” said Willis, who is transferring from the University of Cincinnati to Wabash Valley Junior College (Ill.). “I feel real relaxed. Coach is giving me a chance to play every day and I’m trying to take advantage of it.”
Cianciolo finished 3-for-6 for the Joes. Other standouts included Jake Morris, 4-for-5 with two RBIs; Alan Mathis, 2-for-2 with an RBI; and Tim Tepe, 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kyle Weldon and Jimmy Brenneman each drove in a run.
