HAMILTON — The Hamilton West Side Blue team capped its near-perfect run through the District 9 11-year-old tournament with a near-perfect game.
Jarod Morrison allowed just one walk while throwing a four-inning no-hitter to lead West Side Blue to a 10-0 victory against West Side White in the championship game Sunday afternoon, July 26.
“He pitched really well,” West Side Blue coach Kenny Coomer said of Morrison, who struck out eight batters in four innings. Only a two-out walk to Evan Gregory in the top of the fourth kept Morrison from a perfect game.
“Our pitching has been great this whole tournament,” added Coomer, whose squad outscored its opponents by a combined 48-0.
Bryce Couch threw a four-inning perfect game against East Hamilton in the first round, and Brooks Robinson threw a two-hitter in a 20-0 victory against West Side White in the winners’ bracket final.
“That’s a great team and we’ve got nothing to be upset about,” West Side White manager Dave Hughes said. “We knew what we were facing. We tried to keep it as close as possible for as long as possible. But Morrison pitched a heck of a game.”
West Side Blue scored two runs in the first inning, but West Side White pitcher Daniel Sauer recorded back-to-back strikeouts to escape any further damage.
But Robinson led off the second with an inside-the-park home run, and later in the inning he added a two-run double as the Blue team scored seven runs to put the game out of reach.
In addition to Robinson, the leading hitters for the Blue team were Landon Stephens (1-for-2, double, stolen base, two runs), Sam Scott (2-for-3, three RBIs, run, stolen base), Ryan Robinson (1-for-2, double, RBI, run), Alex Schutter (1-for-1, two runs, stolen base) and Andrew Hetterich (1-for-1, run).
With the win, the West Side Blue team earned the right to defend its Ohio championship when the state tournament gets under way Saturday in Chesapeake.
The other members of the Blue team are Garrett Hogan, Cole Heflin, Christian Halcomb and Tyler Hannah. Tim Nichting is the assistant coach.
Members of the runner-up White team are Jacob Jones, Ethan Gregory, Evan Gregory, John Scrimizzi, Daniel Sauer, Tyus Seymore, Zack Rothert, Jake Vance, David Hughes, Drew Baker, Daniel Scott Ian Sorrell and Noah Russell. The assistant coaches are Steve Sauer, Kenny Baker, Brian Gregory and Scott Russell.
