ROSS TWP. — The thrill of breaking a school record is something a lot of athletes never get to experience.
But for Ross High School senior wrestler Joe Conrad, it’s something he’ll likely do over and over and over again during the next five weeks.
That’s because every win Conrad records from here on out will break his own school record for career victories after he set the mark at 118 last weekend with a 10-3 victory against Amelia’s Tyler Scharf.
“It was a big thrill,” Conrad said. “I knew I was close at the end of last year, but you never know what can happen. Every time you step on the mat it could be your last time out there.”
Conrad’s victory against Scharf broke the old school record of 117 that was shared by Aaron Ray and Zach Kanta.
“Both of those guys still come in and work out with us sometimes,” Conrad said. “I tried to call Aaron to rub it in a little, but he didn’t answer.”
Conrad added a 119th win in his fifth and final match at the Loveland Duals last weekend, where he went 5-0.
With at least three and as many as five tournaments remaining, he could set a new mark that will stand for a long time.
“Joe has been a leader in the wrestling room since his first day,” Ross coach Rich Dunn said. “He has always tried to out-work everyone in the room.
“But he also has always taken time to help other wrestlers with their technique, and those two things are the core of Ross wrestling,” Dunn continued. “Joe is the perfect example of what we want our Ross wrestlers to be.”
A three-time league champion and two-time sectional champ, Conrad’s career record is 119-29.
