Prep headlines: Top-seeded Rams open softball tournament with win

SOFTBALL

BADIN 18, DAYTON CHRISTIAN 1: The top-seeded Rams began Division III sectional play with a five-inning rout Monday at Joyce Park. Lizzy Miles was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs for Badin, which got a three-hitter from Anna Weber against the winless Warriors. Adding to the offense were Weber (three RBIs), Crystal Rains (two RBIs), Rachel Schultz (three hits), Andrea Schneider (three hits, two RBIs) and Alicia Dudley (two hits). The Rams (16-5) will host Madison in the sectional semifinals Wednesday at 5 p.m.

ROSS 4, TALAWANDA 1: Shelby Richards went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead Ross in a Fort Ancient Valley Conference West Division win on Monday. Danielle Brewer and Casey Ivey each added a hit for the Rams (13-6, 11-2 FAVC West). The Braves (10-11, 6-8) were led by Caitlyn Calhoun, who was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Talawanda travels to West Carrollton today for its Division II sectional tournament opener, while Ross will host Mt. Healthy on Thursday in D-II sectional play.

LAKOTA EAST 28, MEADOWDALE 0: Lea Buckenmyer (4-0) threw a perfect game with nine strikeouts to lead Lakota East in a Division I sectional tournament win Monday. The top-seeded Thunderhawks scored 13 runs in the first inning and never looked back in improving to 20-2. Claire Lyons went 3-for-5 with six RBIs to lead the offense. Whitney Willms (2-4, four RBIs), Kelsey Forren (2-3, triple, four RBIs) and Buckenmyer (2-4, three RBIs) also contributed to the offense.

WAYNE 5, EDGEWOOD 3: Edgewood scored three times in the sixth inning, but it wasn’t enough as the Cougars lost in the first round of the Division I sectional tournament on Monday. Edgewood (15-6) has one Fort Ancient Valley Conference West Division game with Winton Woods to reschedule.

VANDALIA BUTLER 2, HAMILTON 1: HHS held a 1-0 lead, but gave up a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh and then lost in the bottom of the 11th inning in its Division I sectional tournament opener at Vandalia Butler on Monday. Brooke Bryant had two hits and Elizabeth Herzog scored Big Blue’s only run. Hamilton (8-13) will host Fairfield today in a makeup game.

CINCINNATI CHRISTIAN 8, CINCINNATI HILLS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 7: Rebekah Lotspeich had a double and three RBIs in leading Cincinnati Christian to a Miami Valley Conference win on Monday. Emily Schmitt and Megan Lowry had two hits apiece and Schmitt added a pair of RBIs as well for the Cougars (10-2, 9-0 MVC), who will host Cedarville today at Waterworks Park in the Division IV sectional tournament.

BASEBALL

SEVEN HILLS 5, NEW MIAMI 4: Casey Chestnut slugged his first two home runs of the season and collected four RBIs in a losing effort on Monday. Chestnut also came on in relief of starter Casey Parker and suffered the loss. New Miami (9-11, 6-7 Miami Valley Conference) will host Lockland in the Division IV sectional tournament on Wednesday.

PRINCETON 6, FAIRFIELD 3: No game details were reported. The Indians (14-9, 9-9 Greater Miami Conference) will host the Milford-Withrow winner in the Division I sectional tournament on Thursday.

TALAWANDA 12, MT. HEALTHY 0: Talawanda pounded out 13 hits and scored 12 times in shutting out Mt. Healthy on Monday. Leading Talawanda were Jake Hendricks (3-for-4), John Pellegrini (2-3) and Mike Dyer (double, two RBIs). The Braves (9-10, 7-6 Fort Ancient Valley Conference West Division) will host Fenwick today in the Division II sectional tournament.

ELDER 15, ROSS 10: Elder slammed two home runs and improved to 13-9 overall with a nonleague win over Ross on Monday. The Rams trailed 11-10 after three innings, but could not score any more runs in falling to 16-7 on the season.
