NEW MIAMI — Except for the mud making it a little sloppy for the court, New Miami enjoyed an almost perfect Homecoming game.
The Peter Parker era got its first victory as the Vikings took care of Cincinnati Christian 35-21 in a nonconference game Friday, Sept. 25.
“It feels good for the kids,” New Miami coach Parker said after his Vikings improved to 1-4. “I feel good about all the hard work they do.”
Behind a trio of big plays, the Vikings dominated the scoring in the first half.
After the Cougars went three-and-out on their first possession, Blake Bowlin fielded a punt at the New Miami 40 and streaked 60 yards up the left sideline to give the Vikings the early 7-0 lead.
Later in the first quarter, New Miami was backed up on its own 11-yard line and facing third-and-8. Tight end Casey Chestnut slipped behind the Cougars’ defense where senior quarterback Jacob Lewis, who was named homecoming king at half time, hit him in stride. The Cougars tackled him 87 yards later at the CCS two yard line. Jacob Davis then scored to make it 14-0.
“They hit the big plays when they had to, and they kept us from doing what we do, and that’s run the ball,” CCS (1-4) coach Nate Johnson said.
The Cougars sliced the lead in half when Mitchell Moon connected with Ethan Swank on a 7-yard touchdown pass with 9:17 left in the second quarter.
Lewis and Chestnut hooked up again for the Vikings before half time on a 68-yard touchdown toss to take a 21-7 lead into the locker room. It was the first of three touchdown passes on the night for Lewis.
“We finally played four quarters,” Parker said. “The kids understood that when they played four quarters we’d have a good chance to win, and that’s what we did tonight.”
New Miami added another pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
