Defending Division I state golf champion Korey Ward of Lakota West High School hasn’t been getting much out of his rounds of late.
Ward, a junior, has been hitting the ball well, but not necessarily scoring well.
Until Wednesday, Aug. 19.
Ward, an Ohio State recruit, shot a school-record round of 8-under-par 64 to win the Lebanon Invitational at Shaker Run Golf Club.
Ward’s round featured eight birdies and no bogeys over the Lakeside and Meadows courses at the 27-hole facility.
“I’ve been playing all right, but just not scoring well,” said Ward, who matched his career-low round and beat his school record by three strokes. “... My instructor, Joel Suggs, and I have been working hard lately. It’s starting to come around.”
Ward said he hit 16 fairways and 16 greens, and had just 27 putts.
“It was an easy 64,” West coach Chris Conway said. “He made one 35- or 40-foot putt, the rest of the time he was within 15 to 18 feet. He was down the middle (of the fairways) and made some putts. Everything worked together.”
The course record on the Lakeside and Meadows nines is 66, but because the tournament was not played from the back tees, Ward’s score is not a course record, Shaker Run officials said.
The previous school record was 67, which Ward carded in last year’s sectional tournament at Glenview Golf Course.
Ward’s performance led Lakota West to a runner-up finish. Mason won the event with a 306, followed by West (309) and Lakota East (310).
