LIBERTY TWP. — Lakota East High School Athletic Director Rich Bryant revealed Tuesday, Dec. 15, the three finalists for the vacant football coaching position.
They are: Barry Wulf (Wilmington College head coach); Rick Haynes (Thomas More College assistant); and Carlton Gray (Lakota West defensive coordinator).
“They stood out as candidates through the first round of interviews,” Bryant said. “All three are student-athlete centered. They all have a proven track record within football circles.”
The second round of interviews for the three finalists will take place on Thursday. On the interview committee will be Bryant, district administrators, building administrators and community members.
Wulf has been Wilmington’s head coach the last five seasons, while Haynes wrapped up his third season as Thomas More’s offensive line coach. Haynes was Colerain’s offensive coordinator from 1991 to 2006.
Gray has been on Lakota West’s staff since 2004, serving as the defensive coordinator the last three seasons.
“You can’t question any of their football knowledge,” Bryant said.
Wulf, Haynes and Gray were interviewed last week, as well as three other candidates: Mike Buckenmyer (Kings offensive coordinator, East math teacher); Roy Thobe (Fairborn head coach, former Hamilton assistant); and Vic Whiting (Canal Fulton Northwest head coach).
“I think the process that we have used has been thorough and has given us a good understanding of the individuals we’ve interviewed,” Bryant said. “We’re in a position to hire a great coach.”
Bryant said he will use the holiday break to evaluate the candidates and “get a better understanding of the direction we want to go.”
The goal remains to name a new coach in early January.
