NEW MIAMI — There is no better way to celebrate a victory on homecoming, especially when it snaps a six-game losing streak.

And that is exactly what the New Miami Vikings did with a hard-fought 42-36 Miami Valley Conference victory over the Cincinnati Christian Cougars at Mara Field Friday night.

“It feels great,” coach Jim Jewett said of the Vikings victory. “The kids worked real hard for this victory.”

New Miami drew first blood quickly to begin the game. The Vikings drove 50 yards in five plays, capping the possession with an 18-yard touchdown run by junior running back Clay Williams to take the lead 7-0.

Officials delayed the game 42 minutes due to lightning strikes in the area, but once play resumed, the Vikings offense picked up right where it left off, extending their lead to 13-0 a 15-yard romp by Williams.

Williams would finish the game with 153 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns.

“He was unconscious,” Jewett said. “He was having a good night so we just kept giving him the football.

Freshman quarterback Logan Katsetos brought CCS back on the next possession by hitting running back Adam Spies on a 52-yard touchdown pass to close the deficit to 13-6 with 9:55 left in the first half.

The Cougars scored again on a 1-yard run by Katsetos to close the gap to 13-12 with 1:46 remaining in the half, but the Vikings retaliated with a another Williams touchdown for a 19-12 lead. The Cougars came right back as freshman Kameron Antwine returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a score, but missed the extra point attempt.

CCS missed every two-point or extra-point attempt in the game.

“We’ve got to learn to finish things,” said CCS coach David Fulcher.

The Vikings extended their lead in the third quarter with a 1-yard run by Kellum to make it 26-18.

The Cougars came clawing back, however, as Antwine took the ensuing kick again for 75 yards to make it 26-24.

For every punch delivered by the Cougars, New Miami had a counterpunch. Kellum hit Williams on a 75-yard scoring strike — Williams’ fourth touchdown of the game – and junior running back Cody Brown was successful on the ensuing two-point conversion to stretch the Vikings lead to 34-24.

New Miami improved to 2-6, 1-4 MVC. CCS is 2-6, 0-5.
