HAMILTON — New Hamilton High School football coach Bob Jacoby has been as successful as any coach in Ohio the last 21 years, and he said he intends to continue that trend with Big Blue.
“I have not seen any film and I have not met the first player, but I understand Hamilton has a good base of kids returning from last year’s team,” the 53-year-old Jacoby said. “I know that they were on the verge of every game of being able to pull out some big victories. So I think the future is bright.”
Jacoby’s tenure officially begins today, March 10, although he will finish the school year in his current position as dean of students at Hamilton Twp. High School.
“I’m going to be here after school hours three days a week, probably Mondays, Wednesday and Saturdays,” Jacoby said. “Some of that will be spent in the weight room, some of it is going to be spent meeting with kids, some of it’s going to be spent with coaches and some of it will be spent just meeting people in the community. I’m going to try to familiarize myself and roll up my sleeves and get started.”
Jacoby discussed several other issues with the media following the school board meeting Tuesday night.
On his coaching staff: “I don’t have anybody in mind currently that’s set in stone. I haven’t met the staff that’s currently here, but I think we have a lot of great prospects. I think it’s going to be more whether they’re comfortable working with me than the other way around.”
On his coaching style: “I’m conservative. I would like to center our team around defense first and go from there. I think defense wins championships. We’ll be sound at running the ball and hopefully we’ll be able to stop the run. As head coach I’ve always been the offensive coordinator. Before becoming a head coach I was a defensive coordinator, so I have experience at both. I haven’t decided exactly what I want to do. I may have two coordinators who oversee everything. It just depends on what I find the strengths and weaknesses of our staff.”
On his offensive and defensive philosophies: “(We’ll be) an option-based team. Some people call it the veer. I’m not sure if that’s what it truly is anymore. Everyone has their version of running option just like everyone has their version of running the spread. But I have an option-based offensive philosophy. Defensively we’ll run a 4-3.”
