Senior Jessica Fansler, a Hamilton High School graduate, is the second-leading scorer this season for the Winthrop University women’s basketball team.
The 5-foot-11 guard/forward is averaging 6.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per contest for the Eagles (2-4). She leads the squad with eight 3-pointers.
Fansler has started every game for Winthrop, located in Rock Hill, S.C. The NCAA Division I Eagles play in the Big South Conference.
Winthrop returns to action at home Saturday, Dec. 5, against South Carolina Aiken.
• Bluffton is off to a 3-1 start, aided by the play of sophomore guard Kirstie Runion (Cincinnati Christian).
Averaging 20.3 minutes off the bench, Runion is marking 4.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.
Football
Case Western Reserve junior place-kicker Sam Coffey (Lakota East) has earned a spot on the University Athletic Association first team for the third straight year.
Coffey paced the Spartans with 84 points, converting 57-of-62 extra points and 9-of-16 field goals.
Case (10-1) lost to Trine 51-38 in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
• Butler redshirt sophomore defensive end Grant Hunter (Lakota West) has been named to the Pioneer Football League’s second team.
Hunter, a first-team selection last year, missed three games with illness, but still led the Bulldogs and ranked among the league leaders in sacks and tackles for loss.
Butler (10-1) tied Dayton for the PFL championship and set a school record for victories this season. The Bulldogs close the season Saturday, Dec. 5, hosting Northeastern Conference champion Central Connecticut State in the Gridiron Classic.
Men’s cross country
Sophomore Jordan Parayil (Lakota West) finished 28th in 34:16 for Bellarmine at the NCAA Division II 10K regional meet hosted by Wisconsin-Parkside on Nov. 7.
