CINCINNATI — Hamilton never trailed while picking up its first Greater Miami Conference boys basketball win Friday over Sycamore.

Saturday, the Big Blue never led and couldn’t get in sync offensively during a 47-33 nonconference loss at St. Xavier.

Hamilton (3-9) shot 28.2 percent from the field (11-of-39), went 1-for-8 on 3-point shots and committed 19 turnovers, leaving coach Tim Robinson disappointed that the Big Blue couldn’t build on Friday’s win.

“It just seemed like we played last night and they didn’t,” said Robinson, whose team is off until returning to GMC action Friday at Princeton.

“They wanted it a little more. We were sluggish in the beginning. We just didn’t seem to have our legs under us. You could see it in our shots, and we didn’t get any loose balls. I was hoping we’d come out hungry, but we were flat.”

Senior center Breon Boyd scored 13 points and senior center Torrell Sutton collected a game-high 13 rebounds — seven on offense — before fouling out with 4:52 left in the game to lead Hamilton, which was trying to string together back-to-back wins for the first time since beating Edgewood and Springfield in the first two games of last season.

St. Xavier senior guard Charles English had a game-high 16 points. The Bombers (4-8) snapped a six-game losing streak.

“We both had similar records, and we were hoping we could come in here and steal one,” said Robinson, whose squad had won the last two games in the series.

The Big Blue fell behind 7-0 before Quintin Bailey made a free throw with 3:48 left in the first quarter. Boyd’s short jumper from the left baseline with 3:10 left in the quarter was Hamilton’s first field goal.

St. Xavier’s defense is starting to come around, coach Scott Martin said.

“One of the things we’ve been emphasizing is defensive pressure,” he said. “Our guys are getting better and better at that.”

St. X held HHS to three points in the first quarter and two in the third quarter.
