HAMILTON — A slow start Tuesday night was really the only thing that slowed down the Badin High School boys basketball team.
The Rams didn’t score until there were more than two minutes gone in the game, but they went on to a 57-33 win over Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy at Mulcahey Gym.
“The first couple minutes were slow,” said Badin coach Nick Argentati, whose team returns to Greater Catholic League play Friday night at home against McNicholas. “When we shoot the ball like we did tonight, we can be good, anybody would be. As a coach, I get new guys in there until I see something that works.”
Senior guard Jimmy Kes broke the ice with a basket with 5:40 left in the first quarter and senior Jonathan Kirsch followed that a minute later with a stickback for a 4-0 lead.
CHCA came back with a three-point shot by senior Jon Price to make 4-3, but the visiting Eagles were never that close again. Kes hit a trey with 3:53 left to put the Rams ahead 7-3 and it was 18-7 after a quarter.
At halftime, Badin led 32-12.
Badin (6-2) had three players in double figures against CHCA, led by senior Alex Wendel with 12 points and Kes and senior Joe Marot with 11 apiece.
The Eagles, who outscored the Rams 13-6 in the fourth, fell to 2-6.
“In the fourth, we got sloppy,” Argentati said. “I get mad when we get sloppy. We have a chance to do special things (this season). It’s about more than tonight and we will not be able to be sloppy against those teams.”
CHCA coach Andy Keimer said Badin controlled the game.
“They did a great job of dictating what we could do offensively and defensively,” Keimer said. “They never let us feel comfortable on defense. It all was one possession at a time. We could not sustain anything. They knocked down a shot and we rushed and got out of our game.”
Price led CHCA with 14 points.
