HAMILTON — The Badin High School boys basketball teams was having one of those nights where no shots seemed to fall, so coach Nick Argentati turned to his bench to get just what the Rams needed:
Mohr offense.
Sophomore guard Cameron Mohr watched his Badin teammates miss nine consecutive 3-pointers before coming in and sinking one to stretch a one-point lead to four at the end of the third quarter Tuesday night against visiting Dayton Carroll.
Mohr went on to score his team’s first two baskets of the fourth quarter to collect all seven of his points in a span of less than two minutes, sparking the Rams to a 42-35 victory.
“Everyone else was missing so I just figured I’d put up my shots, too, and try to help the team as much as I could,” Mohr said. “I felt like I did a pretty good job, and it helped turn things around because the team played great in the fourth quarter.”
Badin (10-5, 4-3 Greater Catholic League Central Division) led 28-22 after Mohr’s seven-point spurt, and senior guard Joe Marot kept the momentum going by hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to help the Rams pull away from the Patriots (9-6, 4-6 GCL North).
“Once we see one go in, it just kind of steamrolls from there,” said Marot, who finished with nine points. “Cameron lit the spark for us, and I think one by one everybody got their confidence back.”
Prior to Mohr’s 3-pointer, Badin was 1-of-10 from the field in the third quarter. In the fourth, the Rams went 6-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free throw line, with senior guard Alex Wendel knocking down all four.
“That third quarter was our opportunity,” Carroll coach Dennis Wahle said.
“If we’re able to hit some shots and get the upper hand going into the fourth quarter, I think we’re feeling a lot better about ourselves and the outcome could have been different.”
Carroll senior guard D.J. McCommons scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter to share team honors with junior guard Jake Johnson, but the Patriots never got any closer than three in the final frame.
They trimmed the deficit to 34-31 with 2:26 remaining, but Mohr came up big again with an assist on an entry pass to Morgan Reynolds, who layed the ball in for two of his team-high 10 points.
“(Mohr) hasn’t been playing a ton, and I know he hasn’t been thrilled with that,” Argentati said.
“But he kept working hard and got a chance tonight, and he did some good things.”
