HAMILTON — The Badin High School boys basketball players did their best Mother Nature impersonation Tuesday night, Jan. 5, against Dayton Chaminade Julienne.
The frigid Rams went an icy 0-for-16 from 3-point range and made just 10 shots from the field overall in a 57-28 loss to the visiting Eagles at Mulcahey Gym.
“When you don’t make shots, it looks like you played really, really bad,” Badin coach Nick Argentati said after his team’s four-game winning streak was snapped, dropping the Rams to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the Greater Catholic League Central Division.
“We may not have played as bad as I’m thinking right now,” Argentati continued. “But it looks that way because we couldn’t make a shot.”
Chaminade Julienne (7-1, 2-0 GCL North) had no such problem. The Eagles made 15-of-21 shots in the first half, including 6-of-9 from beyond the 3-point arc, to bury Badin by halftime.
“Badin’s got a lot better team than that, they just didn’t shoot very well,” CJ coach Joe Staley said. “I honestly don’t think we did a very good job against them. We gave them a lot of great looks, they just didn’t make them.”
Eagles senior Matt Vest, a Wright State University recruit, led all scorers with 16 points, while senior Mike Pyper kick-started the CJ offense by scoring 11 of his 13 in the first half. Senior Joe Staley added 11.
“They’re way better than I thought they were, and I knew they were pretty good,” Argentati said of the Eagles. “I think those guys in the blue jerseys over there contributed to most of what you saw tonight.”
Junior Colton Mehlman was the only Badin player to reach double figures, finishing with 11 points, and he also pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
The Rams shot 10-of-44 (23 percent) from the floor and committed 19 turnovers.
“They’re tenacious defensively,” Argentati said. “It’s almost like playing Moeller in a sense. You’re so sped up from trying to get open that when you did get an open shot, you’re not in rhythm.
“We got our rear ends kicked, but if we have a little bit of character we’ll come out the next two days and practice and work hard and be ready to go Friday night.”
The Rams travel to Roger Bacon on Friday. The Eagles will put their six-game winning streak on the line Saturday against Kettering Alter at Wright State.
