WEST CARROLLTON — The host Chaminade Julienne Eagles dished out a lot of Payne during Friday’s 34-17 homecoming win at West Carrollton High School, and there wasn’t anything Badin was able to do about it.

Brandon Payne rushed for 162 yards on 16 carries, scoring a pair of touchdowns along the way.
“That’s our typical running game. It just took us a couple weeks to get it going,” said first-year Chaminade Julienne coach Marcus Colvin, whose team has won four straight games after two losses to open the season. “Badin’s a tough football team. I know the scoreboard doesn’t reflect that, but we beat a good football team tonight and we played well.”

Colvin said the real credit for the Eagles’ rushing success went with his offensive linemen — Mitchell Jones, Sean Vahldiek, Dan Perez, Zach Poelking and Brian Beall — who opened up big holes for Payne and the rest of the Eagles offense. CJ gained 208 yards on the ground and 320 yards in all.

“That’s where the credit should truly go,” Colvin said. “They’ve been doing a tremendous job for us lately. They’re not very big in terms of size, but they’re very physical and they really get after it.”

Rams coach Bill Tenore said his team knew what to expect from CJ’s offense, but couldn’t do anything about it.

“We knew what they were going to do, but we just had trouble stopping them,” he said. “They’ve got a couple really nice backs, and they’ve got some big kids and some fast kids. That really gave us trouble. Chaminade’s got a really nice team.”

After CJ’s Niles Isaac returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a score, Badin (3-3, 1-2 Greater Catholic League Central) battled back in the early going.

A 14-play, 79-yard drive led to Tyler Williams’ 29-yard field goal. Then, Luke Wurzelbacher notched the first of two interceptions on the night and returned the ball to the Eagles 6-yard line. Four plays later, Wurzelbacher, who also doubles as the team’s quarterback, dove in from a yard out for a touchdown. A Williams PAT gave the Rams a 10-7 first-quarter lead.

CJ (4-2, 3-0 GCL North) got an 8-yard TD from Payne in the second quarter to take the lead for good.

The Eagles added three second-half TDs.

Wurzelbacher hit Austin Rieman with a 33-yard TD pass in the fourth for Badin.

“I like how we kept battling in the second half,” Colvin said. “We preached at halftime that the score was 0-0 to start the second half. And our guys came out and put the game away with those second-half scores.”

The Rams visit Purcell next Friday night. C-J hosts Fenwick.
