CCS girls capture MVC Gray crown

CINCINNATI — Kirsten Paul scored 19 points and Abby Wolford had 14 on Monday as the Cincinnati Christian School girls basketball team clinched the outright Miami Valley Conference Gray Division title with a 64-36 road victory over Clark Montessori.

Katie Bandenburg chipped in nine points for the Cougars, who improved to 12-6 overall and 7-5 in the MVC. They will host Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy on Wednesday.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Sharp, Fernandez lead MUH women

HAMILTON — The Miami University Hamilton women’s basketball team defeated Ohio State Lima 74-47 on Saturday in Ohio Regional Campus Conference play.

Erin Sharp, of Edgewood, scored 16 points, and Brittany Fernandez of Ross added 11 to lead the Harriers (11-8, 7-4 ORCC).

MUH hosts Clark State on Saturday in its home finale.

Mavunga earns MAC East honor

CLEVELAND — Behind two strong performances last week that helped lift Miami University’s men’s basketball team to its first back-to-back wins this season, senior forward Julian Mavunga was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week on Monday.

For the week, Mavunga averaged 14.5 ppg, 14.5 rpg and 6.5 apg while shooting 40 percent from the field and 77.3 percent from the free-throw line. He never came off the floor in either game.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

National award for MU’s Harwell

CHICAGO — Miami University’s Nick Harwell (Missouri City, Texas) was named winner of the Mercedes-Benz National Receiver Performance of the Year, Intersport announced Sunday.

Harwell won Week 10 voting with his school-record-breaking 15-reception, 229-yard, two-touchdown performance in a tough 24-21 loss to Temple.

Harwell joins McMurry’s Jake Mullin who was named FRS Quarterback Performance of the Year, Purdue’s Akeem Shavers who was named Marines Running Back Performance of the Year, and Nevada’s Brett Roy who was named Defensive Performance of the Year.

All-Star Performances of the Year was a four-month competition that let fans determine which individual performances reigned supreme during the 2011 college football season.

COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY

RedHawks sign 8 to letters of intent

OXFORD — Miami University field hockey coach Inako Puzo announced Monday the signing of eight future RedHawks to national letters of intent.

They are Angela Amon (Louisville, Ky./Assumption), Camerin Colby (Downington, Pa./Downington West), Kasey Hess (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra), Lizi Kuhl (Louisville, Ky./Assumption), Jenna Mengle (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland), Pauline Shih (Clarksville, Md./River Hill), Demi Wideman (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne Oak Hill) and Sarah Scott Worth (Raleigh, N.C./Saint Mary’s).
