Cincinnati Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez will make a start for the Dayton Dragons on Wednesday, Sept. 1, when they begin the season’s final homestand against the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Fifth Third Field.
The Reds announced today they were optioning Volquez to Dayton, where he becomes part of the Dragons’ 25-man roster and will pitch Monday as well.
Also, the Reds placed outfielder Laynce Nix on the disabled list with a sprained ankle to make room for pitcher Aaron Harang, who is starting tonight’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Great American Ball Park.
Volquez’s appearance will mark the second by a Reds pitcher this season for the Dragons. Homer Bailey made an injury rehab start on July 26 against Quad Cities.
Volquez, recently demoted to the bullpen by the Reds, is slated to become the 18th major leaguer to pitch for the Dragons. Most have returned on injury rehab assignments.
“We’re looking at (Volquez) as a quality starter when he has his act together,” Reds manager Dusty Baker told reporters this afternoon. “It gives us viable options in September and hopefully into the playoffs.”
The Dragons will have a new shortstop behind Volquez. It was announced today that Didi Gregorius has been promoted to high-A Lynchburg.
