COVINGTON, Ky. — Cincinnati Bengals rookie linebacker Rey Maualuga pleaded guilty to drunken driving Tuesday morning, Feb. 2, in Kenton District Court, four days after he was arrested in Covington.

Police arrested Maualuga early Friday on charges of drunken driving and careless driving after he struck two parked cars and a parking meter.

Though he was not scheduled to appear in court until Feb. 25, Maualuga’s attorney, W. Robert Lotz, requested that his plea be added to the docket Tuesday morning.

District Judge Ken Easterling sentenced Maualuga to seven days in jail, discharged on the condition that he have no more offenses for two years and that he pay for any damage not covered by insurance, said Kenton County Chief Prosecutor Charles Vaughn.

In a statement released through his agents, Maualuga apologized “for letting everyone down and making a terrible decision to drive under the influence. I wanted to acknowledge fault quickly and accept the consequences for my actions, which are the same that anyone else facing these charges would receive.”

Maualuga also will have to pay $859 in fines and fees, and his license will be suspended for 90 days. Easterling seized his license at the hearing.

How funny is it that we judge others, without judging ourselves? Take english, shut-it-up-quickly (PLEASE)! To; Rookie (Maualuga). Learn from your mistake and move on! America acts like we have the Manson's of the NFL. Is America getting jealous, or is it getting old(trying to make excuses for Ray Lewis finally running out)?
Or, maybe the other screw-ups from other teams, that I guess are just excused, from their mistakes!

It takes integrity? He was on video, there was no denying it. It just takes common sense to admit when you're defeated.

Let's see. He hit 2 cars, blew a number twice allowed and he pleaded quilty? I'm not a lawyer but what the hell else could he do? The amzing thing is the idiots on here saying he owned up. Give me a break. This guy is another Chris Henry (thug / punk) waiting to happen. Underage girls? Sounds familar , huh?

Don't get too excited. It's like Hank Williams, Jr singing his hit song. Like those who are veterans, the rookie is just carrying on an old family tradition.

Kudos to Rey for stepping up & taking responsibility & not "lawyering up" & making excuses. It takes integrity to do that.

With regard to the teen girls, my question would be what were 17 & 18 yr olds from FAIRFIELD doing in Covington at a bar on a school night? Sounds like some great parenting there. There was no implication that Rey was "with" these girls, he might have just met them at the bar. And one could logically assume if someone is in a bar they are of legal age to be there.
