Welcome, ladies and gentlemen of the Big Blue Nation, to the live game thread for the 2013 men's basketball Blue/White Scrimmage tonight in Rupp Arena at 7:00 PM Eastern. Coverage details for the game can be found at this UKAthletics.com link, in case you are wondering if you can receive it live.
Last year, many of us, yours truly included, thought we had a contender — we (and I) were wrong. But this year, we definitely do have a contender, and there isn't much rational doubt about that. Where there is doubt is:
How soon can this group of all-stars become a team?
Who will lead? Last year's team was largely leaderless.
Can these guys put their own personal aspirations aside and put the team before themselves? 2011-12 showed us exactly how this was done. Can 2013-14 follow their example?
None of these questions, among many others, will be answered tonight. But as in previous years, we will gain some insight that may wind up, in retrospect, being prescient. We have seen that before in the comments about this scrimmage.
Here's what I'll be looking for:
How well do these guys share the ball?
How well do they handle the ball?
Do they try to make the easy play, or try to serve up a bratwurst with extra mustard?
Can these guys shoot from the outside?
Can these guys defend even a little bit?
Do we have a point guard who can deliver?
Will it be rag-tag like last year, or show the effects of the new extra practice time granted by the NCAA starting this season?
Do we see any lingering effects of injuries to guys like Willie Cauley-Stein (hand) James Young (shoulder) or Alex Poythress (leg)?
I'm sure you all have lots of things you want to see in particular, but for my money, this one is all about the teamwork. Do we dare hope to dream for some? Will it mean anything at all if we do see it? I hope so.
Alright, that's it. Enjoy the scrimmage, make lots of comments below.
