The incident happened in northern Afghanistan when one of the RPG’s missed its targeted area and exploded in a group of swimmers.
Six boys age nine to 14 were killed including the son of the mayor of the local town who said "we don’t know why they fired the rocket, maybe they were just insane."
Six policemen were arrested but a local lawmaker claims it was an accident "the person who fired the rocket did not mean to shoot at the children," he claimed.
The commander of the cops involved, who is the son of a local warlord, has a different story. He suggests the boys were killed when a piece of unexploded ordinance detonated.
The Los Angeles Times says the mayor scoffs at that explanation. "Everyone has a different story, but we know that it wasn’t an unexploded mortar that the kids exploded. Our children have been killed like birds."
