WinterEdge concert series: ‘It’s all about local’

Hamilton-based band Outta Here performs.

Fitton Center for Creative Arts will continue to showcase a diverse lineup of local talent with the WintersEdge concert series, as Outta Here takes the stage on Saturday, March 25.

“It’s all about local. We’re going local, and it’s been a big focus, as you’ve seen with this year’s season. We really try to focus a spotlight on the talent here in Hamilton, or that grew up here in Hamilton as you’ve seen with The Skivvies or Retired Army Lt. General Rick Lynch,” said Ian MacKenzie-Thurley, executive director of the Fitton Center.

With WintersEdge this year, we’ve changed the programming, intentionally. Last year, we had a lot of amazing bands, but they came from all around the country. These were emerging bands, but they didn’t have a following here in the Tri-State area. We had success last year with local bands and local programming, so this year we decided to put a strong emphasis on promoting and presenting local acts. By local, we mean 513 — Hamilton as well as Greater Cincinnati and northern Kentucky. We’ve had a fantastic response, he said.

Outta Here is a Hamilton-based band that will perform a mix of rock, blues and country styles. The group’s lineup includes members Dan Gattermeyer, Larry Schuster, Ron Koch, Steve Burlew, Pat Bach, Norm Liles and Rick Goodman.

The band has performed at local venues and events throughout Southwest Ohio as well as previously at the RiversEdge concert series. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the concert will begin at 8 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.

The WinterEdge concert series is a partnership with RiversEdge that focuses on local rock, pop, country and blues acts. Dallas Moore will close out the 2016-2017 WintersEdge season on Saturday, April 29. This is the second year for the series.

Celebrating Self luncheons

Another upcoming event that will bring local talent to the Fitton Center is the popular Celebrating Self luncheon series. On Wednesday, April 5, the event will highlight the expertise of Hamilton City Schools Superintendent Tony Orr.

During the luncheon, guests will learn more about Superintendent Orr and his role with the Hamilton City Schools. He became the Superintendent of the Hamilton City School District in 2015, having previously served as superintendent of Northwestern Local Schools, a rural district in Springfield, Ohio.

His career highlights also include serving as assistant superintendent for Huber Heights City Schools and teaching secondary English for many years. He has received countless accolades in the field of education, including serving as President of Wright State University’s Education Honor Society, being twice recognized by his former students as “Teacher of the Year,” receiving an Outstanding Achievement Award in Education for his work with students with disabilities and receiving the “Citizen of Education Award” from the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Ticket cost for the Celebrating Self luncheon series is $16 for Fitton Center members and $21 for nonmembers. A ticket includes a catered lunch and a talk from a special guest speaker. The luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m.

On Wednesday, May 3, Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi, artist and advocate, will close out this season’s Celebrating Self luncheon series. Mazloomi is a 2016 inductee to the Quilters Hall of Fame Museum, and her quilts have been exhibited exclusively at the Smithsonian and beyond.
