HAMILTON — The next installment of the Music Cafe will feature new friends, and old friends in a new format.
Dan Walz has performed at the monthly showcase of area artists as a solo singer/songwriter, but this time he’ll be bringing his new band, Whatever, for its first public performance.
Walz, a resident of Cincinnati’s West Side, met bassist Larry Morgan and pianist Nick Sarakatsannis at an open mic night when they got on stage with him and improvised some accompaniment to Walz’s original songs.
“There was such a great energy there that I thought we’d try to continue it,” he said. “We’re all guys in our 50s, so there’s no aspiration to make a hit record and go on the road. We’re just doing this for the enjoyment of the music and to present some of my original material. I told the guys when we got started that we’re not going to make any money, but I know some nice places we can play.”
Walz likened Whatever’s sound to “dinner music,” at least as far as the level of sound goes.
“We’re not a rock band by any means,” he said.
Joining them on the program will be Papa Joe Kretschmer, a resident of Oxford and a Music Cafe regular. Kretschmer plays folk music and original songs, usually with a humorous twist, and Bob Kotz, who described himself as “a songwriter who sings my own songs and some folk/rock/country covers.”
Also on the bill are singer/songwriter John McIntosh and rock band Fare Haven.
