HAMILTON— When Dwight Lenox sings jazz at the Fitton Center for the Creative Arts on Saturday, he’ll do it his way.
That means that he and his band will put their own spin on music by artists ranging from Norah Jones to Bobby Darin,
“We do music from the ’30s to the 2000s, like Nat King Cole, Cole Porter, Gershwin, Stevie Wonder and Lou Rawls,” Lenox said. “We’re not going to focus on anything specific, just a lot of great music.”
The concert will be at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30 as part of Fitton’s EntertainmentPlus! series.
Some of those will be from Lenox’s five albums, and most of the music in the show will be covers, but “there will be changes in the music so it fits my personality,” he said.
For example, Lenox takes “Don’t Know Why” by Jones and turns it into something unique. He didn’t want to describe exactly what he did, but he promised, “When you hear it you’re not going to like it a little bit, you’re going to like it a lot.”
Older songs will get a similar treatment as well. Gershwin’s “But Not for Me” is “another one of those change-ups. It’s been done as a ballad, it’s been done as swing. You’ll have to wait and hear how it works,” he said,
Lenox will be backed by Ed Cottle on piano, Guy Remonko on drums, and Brad Mellon on bass.
Other jazz artists Lenox has shared the stage with include Sammy Tucker, Hank Marr, Freddie Hubbard, Ramsey Lewis and Herbie Mann.
A post-performance reception with Lenox is included in the ticket price, which is $15 for members, and $17 for non-members. Call (513) 863-8873 or visit www.fittoncenter.org to purchase tickets.
