Fairfield Choraliers employ a little ‘Black Magic’

Fairfield’s Choraliers will take on an edgier theme this year as they aim to bring home another national championship.

Their show, “Black Magic,” addresses the balance between dark and light, love and loss, joy and pain.

“It’s much more of a theatrical and psychological show,” Director Jeff Clark said.

The bar is raised higher each year, and this 43rd season is no different.

More students are taking private lessons and practicing after school, because, Clark said, they all are aware of the competition they will face at the national competition at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tenn.

All three choirs will take to the road. Pure Elegance will compete with the theme “Once Upon A Time,” and Rhythm Express is performing, “So You Think You Can Dance.”

The Choraliers brought home the gold from a national contest last year in Missouri, but Clark said more choirs compete in Tennessee and it will be a greater challenge.

“We are pretty much rehearsing to the bell every day,” he said.

With a younger group eager to impress, he said, this season has the potential to wow audiences and continue the tradition of excellence.

“We compete with the best groups out there, and every year we just get better,” said senior Emily Durban, 17.

The Choraliers’ next performance is Nov. 21.
