Allison Janney, a former Miami Valley School student raised in Oakwood, learned she was nominated for the Globe Monday for playing LaVona Harding, former figure skater Tonya Harding's mother, in the dramatic dark comedy "I, Tonya."
Today she nabbed a Screen Actors Guild nomination in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role category.

Janney has had five Golden Globe nominations for roles in “The West Wing” and CBS's “Mom,” but her Best Supporting Actress nomination for “I, Tonya” marked her first nomination for a film role.
The Los Angeles Times asked Janney how it felt to be nominated for her first film role.
“Yeah, I mean it’s a different category and it’s thrilling. I’m really proud to be in this category and I love working in films. I love film, so to be included in this conversation and this world and this arena is a real thrill for me. I’m very proud of it,” she told that newspaper.
Mary J. Blige, Hong Chau, Laurie Metcalf and Octavia Spencer are also nominated in that category.

Janney was inducted into the Dayton Region’s Walk of Fame in September.

Janney's first role on stage was Noah Claypole in "Oliver Twist" at Miami Valley School, where she started honing her singing voice.
She left the school after her ninth-grade year to attend boarding school at the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut.
It is ironic that her first Golden Globe nod for a role in a film is for a film about figure skaters. Janney was once an aspiring skater herself.
But she suffered a serious leg injury at a high school party in Oakwood after high school graduation. Party-goers were playing a balloon game.
“Someone stepped on the back of my dress and it ripped, and I was afraid I was going to expose myself in front of the whole party so I ran inside and hit the plate glass,” she told us when we talked with her for her Dayton Walk of Fame induction.
Janney was forced to take a year off between high school and college as a result of her injury.
